iPhone 18 and other new Apple stuff

As mentioned on the iPhone 17 thread, it’s fast approaching time for the launch of the 18. I’m sitting here typing on my 15PM, and not really expecting to be tempted unless there’s a massive upgrade.
Rumours so far:
Apple may launch a folding iPhone. Personally I’ll be surprised if they do, as I think cost to develop & produce is high, leading to high price and low demand.
Variable aperture for the main camera. Good on paper, but with relatively small sensors I’m unconvinced of the benefits.
Maybe an increase to 12GB RAM
Maybe a move to 2nm silicon (good for battery life)
It’s also looking like they may split the launch with high end models in Autumn, and “standard” models waiting until spring.
iOS 27 looks interesting though - rumoured to be a “stability” release that should resolve some of the gripes in iOS 26. I’m not on the beta programme yet so can’t comment.

Brilliant devices. Lack of separate audio output is the only drawback. I could live happily with a larger form factor if it had either a digital audio output or a decent DAC and analogue output. Magnum 475 said:

As for the new devices, I have no interest in a folding phone if it's anything like the horrible screen on the Samsungs. Even if they somehow make it more glasslike, it'll be a chunky old hector when folded and that's half the battle, making it feel invisble in a pocket.
The 17 Pro Max is sill an absolute beast, no doubt the 18 will be even better though. The camera button thing (action button?) can die afaiac though, Useless.
I'm on iOS 27 already and it has a few nifty enhancements. I would not be surprised if they change the naming convention to iPhone 27 too.

I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that the folding iPhone 'Ultra' was most definitely going to be announced this year?
Remains to be seen whether or not I will upgrade, will have to read the reviews.
I'm quite smitten with my 17PM and I love the orange colour so it's not even a given I'll upgrade at all, which will be the first time in many years.
Going back to a Pro over a Pro Max would probably be the only reason.
ETA: I am definitely holding out for the next Apple TV too, not been a decent revision in a long while. There's also fairly credible rumours that Apple is developing a touchscreen MacBook Pro with a slimmer form factor, that's another one that'd tempt me.

I’m still on an M1 Pro 16” MacBook (actually 2 of them - one for work & one for me). Don’t see any need to upgrade in all honesty. It runs DaVinci resolve, Lightroom, Photoshop without getting warm and will great performance. I can’t help but think Apple made the M1 Pro too good, as there’s no real need to upgrade.

You're right, there is never really a need to upgrade and it does take some creative reasoning to do it, but I usually find someone in the office who needs a new laptop, give mine a reset and a bit of a spit polish and encourage them to take it - I then give theirs to one of my nephews or friends kids.I'm currently using this;
Pistonheads and Microsoft Office is never going to trouble it but where's the fun in being sensible about it, Apple have a way of reeling you in.
