Mastic men

I've had a go and the verdict was "fook this I'm not doing this bit".

Has anyone done a DIY bathroom tile job then got a mastic man in? I'm worried he'll be picky about gaps etc.

On the other side if he does what I've seen pro's doing on Instagram I'll be chuffed as nuts.

Housebuilding companies subcontract trades, such as electricians, plumbers, tilers and so on. Mastic is a specific suubbie trade, because to do it well is a real skill.

Always found that Insulation tape, silicon tool, draw the gun backwards keeping a ball under the nozzle, with dow corning sealant gives ok results.

Yes a lot of the guys I see doing it are on new builds, a lot do the windows that have mahusive gaps.

I felt that for the level of measure taken on tileboarding tanking and the like I'd better get this one sealed up appropriately.

If you're doing round the bath, then fill it with water first.

Well worth it, I used to do it myself on jobs but now just hire a guy in and the are levels above anything I could do, it’s also not as expensive as you think, I was £150 for a livingroom, kitchen/diner hallway and bathroom.

The baths a bette steel, it wont need that though from my view.

Personally, I just mask everything with decorators tape, then smooth with a wet finger.

Never found a trade yet that I couldn’t do a better job than 95% of them with a little patience and application.

None of it is rocket science.

And yes i did silicone my own bathroom (with neat thin lines), whereas the guy I paid to do our kitchen thought 7mm was a good target..

Seconded. Did a load of skirting with that last year - was ridiculously easy for a rank amateur like me.

Yes but child labour is illegal.

On the other hand as a fully grown adult I can use a Fugi kit and after 2 hours and about 3 tubes of expensive silicone, 4 rolls of paper towels and a lot of swearing, I can just about make it look like it was done with someone sober.

Getting the initial clean lines is not the issues. It is getting clean lines without creating a 4 inch bow wave of excess silicone that overflows past the edges of the Fugi tool and spreads all over the tiles. That is the difficult bit.

I can turn my hand to most things, but this skill is pure dark arts.
