VW Arteon DSG Fault

Hi,

I have 2017 VW Arteon 2.0 Petrol 190PS 7 Speed DSG.
95,000 Miles.
It has given a "Gearbox Error: Can Drive on".

The car drives normally.
It was looked at by a VW Specialist in Basingstoke who has identified the error relates to the Auxiliary Oil pump on the DSG.
They have said this is a fairly common fault, where the screws on the pump cover come loose and may now be rattling around inside the gearbox.

They have quoted ~£1,000 to take the gearbox off to take a look, but warned that it would most likely need a new gearbox as the screws and cover would now be churned up inside.

Is anyone familiar with this?
Is there a better option I should explore?
Any reason to take it to VW directly? The specialist said they probably have more experience than the main dealer (but they would say that).

Speak to Milta nr Bristol before you go any further, if only for a reality check.

Get the exact DSG fault codes from your mechanic, may not be as bad as they say.

Also subject to type pof gearbox you have, you may have access to auxiliary pump area, without moving the box (I think I read this somewhere before, so I may be talking crap)

The oil pump is a common enough failure that there's an OEM repair kit,

It is of course not the only possible fault.

I have spoken with the specialist; my take is that the cover of the aux pump has probably come loose.

If I am lucky, the bolts are loose but still attached.
Unlucky, and they have come fully out and could have caused internal gearbox damage.

The specialist wants £1000 to take the gearbox off to find out. I think my best option is to start with a Gearbox Specialist in Reading who can either refurb my box or drop in a refurbished box with a warranty.

I am waiting for the diagnostic report from them.

As has been said above, speak with Milta Technologies near Bristol. VW quoted me ridiculous money a few years ago to just diagnose the fault and said I’d probably need a new gearbox based on the codes I had. Milta collected the car from S Wales and fixed/repaired it for less than £1000.

Thanks for the tip. After ringing all local companies without much luck, one call to Milta and I feel better already. The guy i spoke to explained the problem and gave a best- and worst-case quote (£1800-3840)

He couldn't arrange recovery; does anyone have any recommendations for car transportation?
And the absolute cheapest option for hiring a car for about a month?

Another vote for Milta. When they were known as the Bristol Gearbox centre they fixed my Mk 5 Golf GTi DSG while I waited. New solenoids fitted in the lab upstairs.

They were experts back then in the Audi and VW auto boxes and really knew what they were doing.

Just to close this off. The AA took the car to Milta for me. The AA guy said he shouldn't really, as it wasn't a breakdown due to the fact that it had already been to one garage for diagnostics...but agreed to do it anyway, which was a result! (and a £260 saving)

Milta did a test drive and oil sample and suspected it might just be the aux oil pump, but when they took it apart, they suggested the Flywheel should be replaced as well.

Total cost was £2300, which is much better than me thinking the car was a writeoff a few weeks ago.

That's a good result; whilst Milta are not 'cheap', their advice is good, work done properly, and costs considerably less scary than the dealer's "buy a new gearbox" approach.
