Hi,

As my age is catching up on me and my better half we are looking for something a little more comfortable that can take the grand children and do long journeys,

We have had 3 vantages and would like to stay with AM, so it’s good news the DBX exists.

Prices for the 550 seem to have stabilised around a little over 80k, with less depreciation happening .

Do people think they will slide drastically from here in the next couple of years ? Big SUV can drop off quickly, but the premium ones fair better.

Given I’m pretty happy at the price point, what are people’s ownership experiences? I think they are the best looking in the sector, and the ride/handling reports well.

If you’ve had one or own one , would you buy another. ?

If they still made the Rapide that would be interesting, but alas not so.

Thanks for any thoughts

Those 550s are a pretty good deal. As far as holding value, it depends on how much mileage you put on it. Since its an SUV, normal mileage probably isn't a big deal, but if you put a lot on it, the value likely goes way down.

One thing that might not be obvious is that its a couple of inches wider than the current Vantage, so if you have a garage that's tight, make sure it fits.

There appears to be a huge choice of cars.
128 listed on Autotrader.

Motorwatch can be helpful, to judge how long some of the cars have been for sale.

Wayne,

I know you're looking at the DBX 550, but don't overlook the DBX 707. We purchased a new 2023 DBX 707 and have racked up 34,000 miles so far. It is by far the best vehicle I have ever driven! It's fast when you want it, smooth when you want and always classy! I'm sure the 550 might give 80% of the speed with all the class. I am certain that financially buying a used DBX would have been the smarter move, but someone had to be the first owner!

We have had (and have) many other performance vehicles. The DBX is the do everything 4door Sports Car!

I agree with Ted, ours is a 550 and is the complete package, purchased 2nd hand but low kms, classy, plenty quick, great for trips, in the country, on holidays to the snow or to the dump. I’ve had it on the track at AMOC nationals and unbelievably it was as quick as the Vantages.

Get one with a warranty if you can as we have had a few little niggles but nothing serious. No major service issues - now almost 40,000km

Thanks for the recommendation.

Have you got CarPlay fitted , it looks like originally they didn’t have it as an option

They do have car play but it’s wired car play for the early ones. The later 25 model years with the touchscreen has wireless car play

For ownership experience , there’s a long thread on here from a DBX owner, but I can’t find it while browsing on my phone.

Here it is, in the Readers’ Cars section of PH. He used to pop up in this AM part of PH quite often but I’ve not seen him post for a fair while. His DBX ownership story is a long interesting read and I think it’s fair to say there have been lots of ups and downs. smile

I read most of nathwraith's experiences with his 707. It often depressed me, as his experience with the 707 was vastly different to ours. We have owned ours for almost 4 years (2023 DBX707) and it has been everything you could ask for. It has been mostly reliable (knock on wood), fast, fun, luxurious and a jack of all trades vehicle. We have done everything with it except tow a horse trailer.

The only down side is the Poor experiences with the local Aston Dealerships (The local dealership changed hands a few years ago and neither has been good to deal with) during annual services. That being said, the only down side for me is the depreciation of buying a new Aston. However, I think that applies to any Aston that you drive for 34,000 miles. Would I do it again? Absolutely!

So by all means read Nathwraith's review, but understand that not every DBX has the number of faults that he experienced. (As stated above, try to purchase one with at least a 1 year warrently to take care of any niggles.)

Thanks for all the comments. I’m starting my search for the right one.

707 would be nice but quite a premium over the 550, so will have to settle for the slow one smile

Last question , any thoughts on comfort vs sport seats for long journeys?

I've never really tried the "Comfort" seats, so I can only comment on the Sport seats. They are firm, but very comfortable. Most of our trips are short, 15-45 minutes, but we have driven a few 2-3 hour drives and have no complaints. We have yet to take a longer (6-8) hour drive, but assume they would be tolerable. If you prefer the comfort, as they appear much more common in the 550, I would think they too would be comfortable.

Hi Wayne,

I'd be interested to hear if you went ahead with your DBX 550 purchase and if so, what your experience has been?

Sounds like I'm at the same stage as you, as I'm currently on my 3rd Vantage and thinking the time has come to trade it together with my Volvo XC60, for a DBX to accommodate grandchildren and 2 dogs (not to mention my wife who constantly moans about the hard ride and noise in the Vantage!).

By doing so I will still have the thrill of driving an AM, at the same time as having a practical load carrier. My only reservation is the horrendous fuel consumption, particularly with the projection of £2 a litre petrol in the new year.

Would be interested in hearing anyone's experience of real-life fuel consumption amounts. Is the average really as low as 15-23 mpg or with sensible driving (which I know goes against the grain), is it possible to achieve more than this? I would use the car for long journeys rather than local/town driving.

Thanks,
Richard

Sounds like you guys are at the same stage of life as my Dad, he traded an X5 50d and a DB9 GT for a 2025 707 and he is absolutely over the moon.

I also think it's absolutely beautiful.

I'm just entering my 4th decade and I'm tempted myself! It's certainly one car to do it all.

That’s very interesting! Must have been difficult giving up the DB9 GT, but sounds like your Dad doesn’t have any regrets which is encouraging.
Unfortunately my budget won’t stretch to a 707, but I’ll try and find a late 550 with a good spec.
I would definitely take the plunge yourself when finances permit!

Yes it was a lovely car, owned from new in 2016, but did sub 20k miles in those 10 years as I don't think he could be bothered moving the X5 to get it out of the garage and well it was just easier to take to most places. He took a lot of encouragement to do it but he's happy he did.

It is certainly a perfect one car solution, whether I'm a little too young to not have something impractical and whether I'm ready to not have a convertible I don't know but it's definitely got me thinking.

Less in your face/brash than an Urus or G63, more special than an RSQ8, more of a drivers car (and much better looking/special) than a Bentayga/RRS SV/Octa. They really are, IMO, in a bit of a league of their own and everyone loves an Aston! I'm envious of you guys who have them.

Hi,
I have not gone ahead with it yet. I did go and see a nice 550, and they are certainly one of the best SUV designs, but I'm still not sure I am a performance SUV convert. It makes sense, one car to do it all, but I do like the variety of having 2 cars for different purposes. Mrs W would like it very much, she was quite comfortable and didn t have to "fall into that bloody car" , but she's got her own Landie, and everything is low compared to that!

So still on the edge, but if I go the SUV route, its the DBX over anything else for sure.

Completely agree, they are one of a few SUV’s that have nice curves and styling. When I replaced my 2.0D F-Pace 18months ago, I came down to a DBX, F-Pace SVR, RSQ8 or a Macan/Cayene. RSQ8 as you say was too in your face and for me a bit of a compromise on looks. Macan/Cayene were less available unless too old and I thought expensive 2nd hand for what they are.

In the end I ruled out the DBX, but only because of the ancient Mercedes infotainment tech, I really hate the looks of the control unit and more importantly how bad and slow it is to operate, it was the compromise too far for me. This meant I’d want a 2024+ facelift DBX and need to wait 2-3 years for depreciation to make it at a price-point I was willing to pay.

The F-Pace SVR (facelifted model) is a hoot though, still enjoying it after 18months, I don’t regret the decision, it also has similar qualities to the Aston that it can pass un-noticed but has nice styling. I also was able to get an almost fully loaded car (options wise) much cheaper than a non-facelift DBX.

I may revisit the decision in a few years and look for a DBX S or 707. Will be interested to see how they depreciate compared to the pre-facelift cars

Your day will come!

I would recommend getting the convertible/impractical cars out of your system before succumbing to the practical, but it’s obviously a personal choice.

I can relate to your Dad about not using the DB9 as much as he could have. To get my Vantage out of the garage I have to unplug my wife’s car from its charger, move it out of the way, unplug my battery conditioner on the Vantage and take the car cover off, then negotiate the narrow garage door as I reverse it out. Some days it’s just too much effort, although it’s always worth it in the end.

At least with a DBX I would leave it on the driveway and use it more as an everyday car rather than a precious toy. I’m definitely tempted. Just need to get my head around the running costs, although maintaining one car rather than two would definitely result in savings!
