According to Octane magazine:‘The Trust and Montagu family have spent the past two years exploring options for major investment and redevelopment at the existing museum. They have now concluded that a new location offers greater scope to expand public access, educational programmes and community work, including a proposed training centre for heritage engineering apprenticeships’.

So basically the family don't want to maintain the legacy if they can cash in selling to a developer, or did I miss something? I really hope the museum can find a new home, although if it can't some of those cars might appeal to Brooklands and maybe others to Gaydon.

The museum has been losing money for years and years, to the tune of one million quid a week I heard. The rest of the Beaulieu estate is very profitable and has been subsidising it for a very long time. A member of the Beaulieu family does not want to inherit a loss making operation apparently .There seems to be a lot of very well paid people there that take a lot out of the enterprise.

Yeah, there's a bit of something for everyone at Beaulieu - you can look round the house, stroll round the grounds. They have the monorail, vintage bus rides etc. It would be a big loss if it goes - it is pretty local to me and the 'Simply' events are also a good draw. The actual museum exhibits don't change that much but it is still a nice collection.

The Trust finances are kept separate from that of the Beaulieu Estate and that of Beaulieu Enterprises who run the visitor attraction. The Trust is a charity. The lease negotiation involved all three parties and one of them apparently didn’t want to proceed with a new agreement. Without a lease, no lottery funding can be applied for, so the Trust has to move in order to survive. Might be a positive thing eventually for all parties.Hub said:

I/we visited Beaulieu last summer en route to Dorset for the summer holiday. We will do the same this week to break up the journey and add an excursion to a day otherwise lost to travelling. That was our first visit. It was a bit of fun. Not by any stretch a knock out event. There’s not really a huge amount to do or see but sufficient for several hours as a youngish family. Didn’t seem like particularly good value at the time but not overly expensive either. All good. I can imagine a visit on an event day might add a bit more glitter.
On the face of it this doesn’t sound like “good” news but I’m not so naive to believe I have any great understanding of all the details or motivations behind it all.
Losing a million pounds a week, though? How on God’s Earth can that operation lose anything like that sort of money? That sounds absolutely absurd.

I wouldn't think of the National Motor Museum as being a National museum especially its remote location on the South Coast.
When it comes to a motoring/national museum I think more of the British Motor Museum at Gaydon and the nearby Bicester Heritage. The last time I visited Beaulieu it was a little tired, and it's limited in scope and something that wouldn't appeal to my wife or two girls.
