Appalling discrimination in the reporting of this over the years:

Luckily the Guardian has its own photographer out in Bristol to correct the balance later. In the meantime, here s a group picture of taking in both sexes.
The BBC s education story featured three pictures of successful female students, with no male students.
Journalist Martin Daubney reported that there were no young men on the morning s Sky News results day coverage."

Girls get together with friends to go and get results in person. Boys don’t do that sort of thing.
It makes much less of a media story to wait at a boys house whilst he opens his mailed results whilst eating a bowl of shreddies and sat on the sofa in his boxers.

Maybe it’s the weather - my wife commented that many of the pictures local schools are posting on Facebook are girls with a lot of cleavage on show. At my school if they'd wanted balanced M/F photos, they'd have captured a lot of glum faced boys resigned to going to uni via the clearing route. Vs lots of happy looking girls getting to go to proper universities.
That's not true, recently (including this year) boys have outperformed girls at A level. Cynically speaking, I suspect that young women are more photogenic (and charismatic) than young men.
I don’t imagine cynicism comes into it particularly. I would anticipate girls, particularly pretty girls to feature disproportionately in picture editors’ choices. I suspect they know what they’re doing and there would be science to back up their thoughts if anyone really wanted to challenge it.
I’m marginally intrigued that the bias this morning was quite so pronounced, however, and I’m mildly amused the guardian found the opportunity to wallow in a bit of moral superiority.

Probably partly down to variety... 18 year old boys will be like some sort of early RPG video game character builder - maybe 4 or 5 hair cuts to choose from and a dozen outfit variations. So if half your pictures are of boys then people will be asking why you've shown the same group a dozen times...
FFS ... it has always been thus. The Sun put naked young women in their paper because it sells. Rags like the Telegraph did/do the very much the same thing except they use the excuse that it's the Honourable Sarah Bent-Fishspoon's coming out party or it's A-level day or it's the first sunny day of the year and everyone is wearing blouses.

This. None of my sons male friends went to collect their results, many of the girls did. And I'm glad the paps didn't come to my house as he opened his on his phone whilst still in bed and then went back to sleep.Girls get together with friends to go and get results in person. The same way the Telegraph business section used to be very interested in results from clothing retailers so they could feature pictures of hot girls. It is just a question of how blatant they want to be.

Soooooo . The only female tech in a sausage rich environment gets selected for a photo and that s somehow an issue? Anyway, with regards the exam results it does seem even more one sided than I'd expect. I guess it's a bit like the variety of skin colours shown in TV ads - it's not like all of the media has conferred and decided they should all have photos of girls. More likely that each one has separately decided that for their exam results photo they'd rather have a picture of pretty teenage girls than scruffy teenage boys. I like that it's being talked about though and wonder if there are other biases in who they pick to show? But as I say, each picture would presumably be individually chosen.
