Just over 6 yrs ago I had a local paintwork specialist/restorer (who is well known in the Porsche community) sort some corrosion on my 996's front wheelarches, where stonechip damage had gotten worse and bubbled up. He did what looked like a thorough job, the finish was fantastic and I was pleased.

After a few years the corrosion came back, its carried on getting worse and it will need sorting again. Its significantly worse on the driver's side. The car is very much for "high-days and holidays" and hasn't done that many miles since... 15k, mainly in dry weather, never on salty wet winter roads.

Is it reasonable to expect that a repair of this nature (I assume rubbed down, treated and painted) should have lasted longer? Did it go wrong, or was it inevitable it would come back again quite quickly?

Rust will ALWAYS reappear unless the affected area is cut away and new metal welded in.
In my experience, there is no treatment which will give more than temporary results, and some are more temporary than others.
So, in a nutshell, pretty much exactly what I'd have expected.

It depends on what you asked for and what it cost you!

As per the previous post, the only way to deal with rust is chop it out and weld in new metal, but thats an expensive option if you are paying a tradesman.

Rust treatments will hold things back, but it will return at some point, six years seem reasonable if its been treated rather than new metal, products have also improved over the years so I believe that six years will hopefully grow for compromise options over time.

There is a balance, if you have decent metal and when ground down its just a light pitting, then in my opinion, a decent convertor will hold back the tide, but ultimately its down to the owner of the car to decide based on expectations, budget, and value of the car. new wheel arches, with cheap Chinese metal welded in might not last six years if its a poor design that attracts moisture.

I work on restorations and I try my best to give the customer options and pros and cons, so they have the relevant knowledge to make a decision, its all very well saying chop it out, but if you don't have the budget and want a good usable car, sometimes you have to make compromises.

I would agree about chopping it out, I have tried my best over the years on some cars with various potions and meticulous prep and it always returned.

That part on a 996 always gets pelted with stones - The rust is usually just superficial surface rust.

I suspect that the area has become stone damaged again (which one would expect after 6 years) and allowed to rust.

Get it redone (or do it yourself) and then protect the area with some PPF

What did the repairer say about the restoration?

I've not yet taken it back there... will go over soon and see what they have to say. They're a very good outfit so I'm optimistic they will give me an honest opinion, but its always useful to have a frame of reference.

Thanks everyone for your comprehensive views, its really helpful.

Good to know, thanks.
