C63 w204 steering module refurb or replace

Has anyone else had issues with their unit and successfully resolved? Mine has lost comms it seems and has an intermittent failure of indicators as only symptom. The unit was checked when in for service with diagnostics but garage did nothing past day there was a fault.
Not clear if could be worth an auto electrician fiddling and cleaning, or does anyone know if these units be reconditioned or is only option a (heavily AMG overpriced!) Mercedes new unit as they seem non existent used?
