We're looking at a year-old "Approved used" car from a main dealer. It's first service was done 2000+ miles late, so according to manufacturer T's &C's that would normally void the warranty...

Dealer is trying to get confirmation of the status, but has anyone seen similar? Is there a loophole that warranty is reinstated if it goes throughthe approved used scheme?

Most cars start off on the manufacturer warranty then go to the extended warranty after the 2 or 3 years. Terms for those differ.

This is becoming all too frequent now; unless the manufacturer, not the dealer, is prepared to put it in writing, I wouldn't put any faith in 'promises'. The T&Cs are clear.

It would, presumably, still have a one-year 'approved used' warranty, or perhaps two years depending on manufacturer.

Standards have fallen since the pandemic and not all manufacturers insist on a full and correct service history when retailing 'approved' used cars.

The difficulty is that you don't really know until you come to use it but I'd be more concerned about how many miles the car has done without an oil change.

I had this on a six month old M3. First service late. Dealer said they would honour any warranty which came back to bite them in the ass with numerous claims one of which was a new diff

One reason for the delay may be the problem of trying to book the car in for a service, mine has just flashed up that it is due a service shortly, earliest booking is in 5 weeks time...!

What car is it? Some, VW Group for example, like you to do an annual / 10K service but the interval can go to 2yrs / 18.5K miles.

Same with daughter’s Kona EV - it’s 2yrs / 20K but dealers insist it needs an annual interim body check. Took it for service at 1yr / 15K and paid for a 2 yr service. Dealer stamped the interim service box so looks like it was 5K late.

I’d be OK ish with that if buying off a nearby dealer but you wouldn’t want to be getting into that if they were miles away. Plus there’s always the risk they could lose the franchise etc.

Approved Used these days just means you're paying a bit more for the yucca plants and pointy shoes of the salesmen.....Avoid.

And the alternative place to buy one or two year old cars is where, exactly?

Those that don't end up in the dealer network, it's often for a very good reason.

I had this with a Mercedes I put a deposit on once. After looking at several others, I was delighted to find one that was in the right condition, colour, spec etc.

Got home and once I had calmed down I realised I hadn't asked to see the service history.

When they sent it through I saw it had missed a service. As a poster above said the T&C's are clear, in this case it said if the car had not been serviced in line with the stated intervals that any warranty is void.

Asked for my deposit to be returned and the approved used dealer did so with no fuss.

The point is, don't assume just because its "Approved Used" from a franchised dealer, that its a good car. Do your due diligence checks just as you would with any other car from any other dealer.

With a "main" dealer, especially from an alleged German premium brand, simply assume that anything communicated to you verbally, in writing, in any images or videos, or even physically in front of you is based on deception.

Don't trust, and verify very carefully.

Absolute cowboys.

It's the warranty that makes it a good car . I had a used approved BMW . It has a differential twice in one year. Along with much other stuff. Not at my cost . I sold it after one year as I lost faith. Without it being used approved I would have been in a deep hole.

My son bought a used approved Audi two years ago . After one year then Turbo failed. All repairs at Audi cost .

This is why people do it nothing to do with salesman shoes.

Avoid.

Dealer will say anything to get a sale. The manufacturer warranty will be void and their approved used one, whilst better than a non franchise insurance warranty, is a poor relation.
