Two match ban for handball
Discussion
Is this the Baggies last Saturday ? It does seem a strange decision, presumably one of the new rules for this season. The answer is to spot the infringement at the time. Poor refereeing. Surely a fairer result would be to nominate the match as a 1-1 draw.
Even as a Norwich fan, I don't like this outcome and fear for the game if the rule-makers start making arbitrary decisions on individual circumstances.

I have just seen this and looked at the video. In real time difficult to tell and the ref and linesman would have been hard pushed to spot it.
Would be interesting to know who has picked up on it and decided that a 2 match ban is appropriate. What would have happened if the ref had seen it? No goal and nothing else I suspect since I don’t think it was deliberate handball. At best it would have been a yellow card and unless it was his second card then no ban,
Looks harsh to me

It’s blatant cheating. It wasn’t an accident in any way. Isn’t this exactly the sort of cheating that we want to see taken out of the game? Hopefully it sends a message to players.
I’d much rather this be punished than a goal ruled out for a toenail being offside, or a ball maybe brushing the arm of an attacker on the way to him scoring with his feet.

There's isn't a player in the game that would have held their hand up and said they'd handled the ball. The officials didn't see it, the goal was given and the game carried on. Retrospective action in these circumstances is wrong, pure and simple.
Why? It’s within the rules of the game to deal with it retrospectively. There are calls every weekend for cheating to be retrospectively punished and this is an example of it. Opapayer said:

Completely agree. If a player doing that intentionally is allowed to get away with it then it just continues.clive_candy said:

This case is a little different, because it resulted in a goal, and ideally should have been spotted at the time.I disagree about retrospective punishment though. Where a player has CLEARLY engaged in unsportsmanlike behaviour such as a deliberate handball or simulating a head injury, then there should be the possibility of punishment after the match.

Where were we all this weekend? I was at Crewe. There wasn't a player on the pitch that wouldn't have behaved exactly as Heggebo did in that situation. Was it deliberate? Was it instinctive? Could even he be sure whether or not he'd handled the ball. Who can say for sure?
That’s fine and if any of them had scored by deliberately punching the ball into the net then they’d be banned for two games. Opapayer said:

I agree, the blatant diving etc not being picked up by the refs is an issue, but I see this particular example as a slight deflection from the Goalie which meant it changed direction with hardly any time for the player to react, but he should have admitted it, like Robbie Fowler did when Seaman looked like he took him down in the box but he clearly didn't from another angle and RF immediately waved the penalty away [it was still given though by the ref, and RF gently chipped the penalty in to the hands of Seaman]

All the talk about whether the handball was deliberate or not misses the point.
He hasn't been banned for handball he has been banned for "deceiving a match official".
He must have known it hit his hand but carried on as if he hadn't. If you're happy with retrospective punishment for diving then this is the equivalent.

Still doesn't sit well. There's not a player anywhere who'd have told the ref they were wrong to have awarded a goal in these circumstances. Diving is a deliberate act. He hasn't been banned for handball he has been banned for "deceiving a match official".
