Tyre damage - what could cause this?

I'm not going to ask "should I replace this" like some people do, because when I saw this I immediately put the spare tyre on and ordered a new one. The car had been driving normally, so I don't really know when this happened, possibly when the other half was driving it. 
It's supposed to be a decent quality tyre (Good Year), not some cheap junk.
But what could cause this? It looks odd. Zoom in and you'll see some small circles, which a friend of mine pointed out, I hadn't spotted them. One of those circles is at the sidewall end of the cut/crack.

Potholes do weird things. My S2000 has what looks like kerb damage on the wheels that can only have been caused by potholes. The wheels were pristine, potholes sprung up everywhere, I've never hit a kerb but it looks like I have.
So my suspicion is that the sharp edge of a pothole has caused this.

contacted our normally useless as £$%^ council who fixed the pothole...yet refused my pothole damage tyre claim.
I suspect you'll find they only accept liability if the pothole has already been reported as dangerous and they have failed to fix it within a reasonable time. Surprise surprise, always seems to turn out that you're the first person to report it.underwhelmist said:

I browsed the list and couldn't see it, even after reading your post it took me a while .... I wonder why it's amongst the "marques" subsections, between Porsche and TVR? Yes Technical begins with T but it seems misplaced.

Moulding points? Don't think so, I've had a look at the identical tyre on the other side and can't see any of them there. They are also rather irregularly spaced.

Looking at the first row from the tread there is a blob before & after each "sipe" then there is a row in between, then another row before & after each sipe.
