gov.uk MOT vehicle type discrepancy?
Discussion
I'm checking gov.uk for the MOT history of an Audi S1 that I'm wanting to buy, but it is showing as being an A1
Checked a few others from autotrader and sometimes they show up as S1's, other times A1's.
Is this normal?
Here's a random S1 advertised on Autotrader, with the vehicle showing as an A1 on gov.uk

I suspect there are lots of errors in the data, some like that visible others less so. For example, for years now I have found that putting registration number in to tyre sellers site (eg Black circles) reliably produces the right size tyres. And a warning where front and rear took different sizes.
Not so my present car; it has different sizes front and rear, and all the tyre websites produce a size wrong for both (and wrong for the only other version of the car on UK sale), and no warning of there being different front and rears.
Happily I noticed!

I suspect it's fine as an S1 is really just a model variation of the A1 and it depends how it was recorded by the original supplying dealer. I know of an Audi S8 showing as an A8, but it's basically the same car.
One of mine simply shows the model as a MKII, whereas technically it should be an ABC (MKII if they insist). That's how it was recorded by the original supplying dealer in the 'model' category, and that's what it's been for decades.
Just check the vin to make sure it's a genuine S1.

The DVLA just record what's sent to them. It is the original supplying dealer who would have registered it (or the importer in the case of an old American car, if it were imported after being used elsewhere). And yes, its quite common for them to put wrong information or be inconsistent - for example there's plenty of 0.0l engines out there.
