Cashless Society, really?

A bit of a vent, if you'll forgive me. 
My mobile provider (O2) managed to send an "(ESIM)" a thing I'd never heard of to an unknown person for my mobile number about 10 days ago.
The ESIM was for a Samsung (I have an IPhone) and this allowed the person (lets call them a hacker, as that's what they are) to clone my phone and in the process to lock me out of my service and of course to the outside world they are now me.
Credit card application's, online purchases (verifications' of course go to the mobile number), shoes, make up, £2.5k aircon unit and god knows what else.
I've spent hours on my phone trying to sort out banks (Halifax been a customer over 20 yrs), my mobile account, anything else they had got into ebay etc. And here we are over a week later new bank cards (no pin numbers yet) still no access to my current account, reset code posted I'm told as they need to confirm my identity, not seen it. So another 2 hrs on the phone today, that will be 7 days again.
So here I am no money, no access to money, can't transfer from savings account to another account. Funeral costs to pay. Nearest bank branch 60 miles away.
My thoughts on a cashless society have changed slightly.

While your temporary access issue isn't ideal you've inadvertently highlighted the positives of using cards / digital over cash. The bank have the ability to lock down your money to keep it safe and you'll almost certainly get every penny back quite quickly. Try that when someone steals a pile of notes.
That's why I always have a monkey on the hip and a few bags of sand. Daughter wants a new car so if something comes up locally over the bank holiday weekend I can just nip out to see it and do the deal and bring it home . no buggering about with apps, phones and most importantly wasted time.

Your rant is entirely justified. It's for practical purposes impossible to spend money these days without a mobile phone, so without the phone you're toast. I find it terrifying, not least because a couple of years ago some scumbag pretending to me me persuaded the phone company my phone was lost and to send them a new SIM, which they then used to spend to £10,000 on my credit card. Obviously no loss to me as it was clearly fraud but a ridiculous situation all round. Massive inconvenience at no fault of my own.Totally get your rant and hope it was just a little bit cathartic at least.
Having some money around is never a bad idea though - not everyone or for everything to not use isn’t guaranteed.
Things like funeral expenses could use a lot of cash and if you are the Executor you can use “ their “ accounts in which to pay the bills.
Hope your accounts get restored quickly and the fraudulent purchases are all refunded.

.Gov (advised by GCHQ) are saying we should all have cash at home so when the Russians hack our banking system, we'll be able to buy food.So cashless not an option according to them.
I guess all the ATMs will be out of action as well, so how much wodge are we advised to store at home under a loose floorboard or in the fake baked beans tin that no one knows is a safe?bigpriest said:
