Insuring 2nd car short term
Discussion
Looking for suggestions for insuring a second car please
My young lad has got himself a new 2nd hand car, but still has his previous car (a Fiesta). His existing Fiesta policy has allowed him to add his newer car for 7 days. Hopefully we’ll sell the Fiesta this week, but if we don’t, what’s his best option going forward?
Switch his policy to his new car and take out a short term policy for the Fiesta until it sells? Or an annual policy but pay it monthly?

I had this with Direct Line. Outgoing leased Q5 with 6 yr old Golf that I bought to replace it. New old Golf onto the permanent policy and Q5 on to the temp one for 6 weeks ish. I called DL spoke to someone and to be fair to them they made it easy and cheap too.
I was quite surprised.
This was Jan 23 things may have changed.
My advice, speak to a person.

Easiest and cheapest solution is usually to ask existing Insurer to give temporary cover on the new car until the old is sold -not every Insurer will agree obviously. When they do its usually for up to 30 days.
If current agreement cannot be extended then I think I would be taking out the 12 months on the new car and asking the same Insurer to then issue a new 12 months policy on the old car,When its sold cancel and yes I realise there will no doubt be an admin charge but if you were paying monthly they would also be charging you a credit fee on top anyway so the latter may come down to understanding the cheapest end result.
You could of course also insure the old car with a temporary policy with someone else as you say.

Bit of an update - the insurance company for my sons Fiesta won't cover his new Audi S1, but he had already obtained some quotes before buying it and it's looking like he'll have to take out a new policy for it, to run alongside his Fiesta policy. Then, when his Fiesta gets sold he can cancel that policy.
Not sure of any alternative/better options.

In the circumstances that's probably the best option. Not sure of any alternative/better options.
