A new commute for my mrs means going from 2 miles to a roundabout trip of 50 miles a day. Mostly dual carriageway.
I dont really want to put 1000 miles a month on our lovely X3, which is petrol anyway so will cost a lot per month in fuel

Can anyone recommend a something under £2k diesel and auto ?

Are you really going to save anything in the long run?

£2k for the car plus insurance, tax, maintenance, etc in order to save a few quid on fuel in a car that’s perfect for a 50 mile round trip daily?

Sorry for the negative waves but I can easily see this costing you more than the additional fuel costs.

Unless, of course, you just want a second car anyway in which case I’d go Japanese at that price point and stick to petrol.

I still think it will save some pennies, She's looking at a ds3 or qashqai they seem to have great mpg for that trip and £20 tax, insurance about £200 a year.
And yes a second d car will then be needed anyway

I personally doubt you will actually save anything, 50m a journey 2x a day will have the first 10 miles WELL under stated mpg while it warms up twice a day, + MOT, + TAX, + servicing, + insurance, + consumables, and ideally to make them pay diseasels want to be doing more than 12k/year.

Fully agree. The way I would maybe look at this though. Get a cheap car like one of the mercs quoted above. (Although it’s only 50 miles a day, I’d rather a petrol if anything goes wrong on those diesels it will be expensive and they won’t be running optimally for long on a 25 mile drive anyway)

Sell the X3 and you could have something fun for the weekend then.
