Canary Islands 2027 Holiday Thread

With the summer holidays over, it’s time to start thinking about the February winter holiday escape.

Over the past few years it’s been the Canary Islands, although we have considered (and dismissed) Cape Verde and Egypt.

Whilst my favourite of the islands is Lanzarote (particularly Puerto del Carmen that I’ve been visiting for over 40 years), Gran Canaria seems to be the favourite this year.

I last visited Gran Canaria in 1996 staying at the Princess in Playa des Ingles, so I’ve got no current knowledge of the place.

What we are looking for is a coastal resort, with a good range of decent restaurants and some nightlife suitable for a couple in their 50’s (think RUTA 66 in PDC). I also like snorkeling so having a place within walking distance that I can undertake this would be beneficial.

Any suggestions on which resorts we should be looking at would be greatly appreciated. I’m not sure yet whether we’ll be staying in a hotel or apartment.

We’ve been to a few hotels near the lighthouse in Maspalomas over the years, probably liked Lopesan the most. It got a bit pricey so we went to the Costa Canaria in San Augustin last year on a friend’s recommendation. We thought it was very good, a nice touch is that you get a ticket on arrival that reserves your sunbed for your stay. We used to drive all over the island but don't hire cars abroad anymore. Buses are regular and taxi prices reasonable. We like Puerto Mogen for day trips, we get the boat from Arguinigen( probably spelt wrongly) to there. Next year we’re going to spend some time in the Old Town part of the Capital and explore the eastern side of the island.

Went to Gran Canaria in Feb this year, liked it so much we've rebooked the same hotel for next January which is quite rare for us.
Stayed at the Hotel Riu Gran Canaria in Meloneras, pretty much a brain out, fly&flop AI, but a nice location for a morning stroll, or a hike through the dunes before hitting the cocktails.
Planning to venture out a little more this time though, Playa night life is supposed to be quite 'interesting'
The area seems to be quite popular with cyclists which I quite fancy but MrsRace not so much.

If going to the eastern end, I'd recommend the aquarium in Las Palmas, followed by a trip to some caves in a small village (can't remember the name), and then continue to circle the island.

Cheers, we went to the aquarium the year it opened, very impressive. We’re definitely going to explore the north east coastline next visit.
