Many recent posts on PH seem to have been about how awful and violent much of the rest of the county is. I'm pleased to still live in the SE London suburbs where it's both peaceful but there's plenty to do. It's where I plan to live out my days.

It’s always funny how the people that say the love the uk and are “patriots “ are the people who constantly denigrate the capital city, which yes has it’s issues (like any world city) but is a wonderful city.

Most people who moan about London either have never visited the place, visited once as a tourist and found it far too busy, got overwhelmed and vowed never to return or whose whole experience is as a commuter who has never strayed from Mainline London Terminus to their office except to go to Pret at lunch but because they’ve done it for years they consider themselves an authority on London.

when i lived there, i used to hear people denigrate the tube system on a daily basis. its an absolutely fantastic system, it really is. Like you say, the city has its issues, but theres nowhere else in the world I could get up at 4am with a taste for Armenian cuisine and go and have it in front of me within the hour. London is unreal

London is London. It has great places and more run down areas. I like visiting, but I'd hate to live there. I think that's mostly just down to me preferring a quieter life, though.

1. Amputation
2. Stoning (not the nice type)
3. Flogging
4. Executions

AKA muggings and street assault. The exact crime that makes people feel less safe?

I mean a fall in the number of bank robberies for example would be cited as falling crime, doesn't really affect or matter to the general population does it.

that 'total crime' is falling does not necessary entirely aligned with what people perceive as crime is hardly a surprise though. that latter is more like 'visible crime' ie as per the post above that highlighted that very article stating 'it highlighted rises in some crimes such as shoplifting, theft from the person, as well as sexual offences and violence'. KCL can't or shouldn't be unaware of that so not attempting to address that seems slightly disingenuous tbh...

London is not exactly a 'hell-hole', but it has undoubtedly changed. I worked in London for over 30 years from the early 80's - there were fewer people begging, fewer homeless in doorways and there seemed to be fewer dodgy areas. You could wear a decent watch in London back then as there wasn't an underlying fear (whether rational or irrational) that you might get stabbed for it.

Although I no longer work in the centre, I still go to London regularly - so I can see the changes.

I've not been to London for 6+ years so I can't really give any recent first hand experience - it's a city I've always loved visiting for a weekend though.

I did hear a discussion around crime in the city recently from a former Met police officer and they were saying the crime figures for things like muggings, shoplifting, phone thefts are misleading because people are now less likely to report them, they have no faith that the police can / will do anything about it. I think it's these 'minor' crimes that people are fearful of on a daily basis when walking the streets.

I doubt London is much different to any other city though. I live near Glasgow which isn't exactly a crime free utopia.

But none of those are likely to be a concern for anyone walking down the street in any particular area, any more than you'd be worried about electrocution or receiving a lethal injection when visiting America. They are punishments for specific crimes under a judicial system, not things that just happen on the street.

They are just idiots. Still a brilliant city to live, work and socialise in.
