Sorry for the sun link, it’s not on BBC website yet, but has been reported by them on tv.

Shades of Harry Dunn, and to an extent the recent cases where it has emerged US force personnel have been subject to US justice rules on British soil?

Protocol wise, yes, its out of order but in this case I'm failing to see the escaping justice aspect, id assume hes in big trouble but its now on the US's dime not ours. Their prisons are way worse than ours.

Lets see what they do with him before getting fully outraged.

Harry Dunns killer got away with it, hopefully this guy won't and will wish the uk arrested him.

Which bit of that amounts to "got away with it"?

They (apparently) ‘extracted him’ without reference to U.K. authorities.

And with reference (albeit slightly o/t) to the other cases of sex abusers being subject to US justice on U.K. soil (military, for rape etc) it’s been shown they have been subject (mostly) to lower sentences than the would’ve received had they been tried under U.K. law.

Commit a crime (or an alleged crime) here, get tried under our justice system.

Sounds a bit 'foreign law enforcement with no legal powers decided to kidnap someone from a private address in another country without telling anyone beforehand because they couldn't be arsed filling the forms in'.

hyperbole intended

Well, not getting an actual custodial sentence, and being banned from driving in a country she’ll never return to hardly seems quid-pro-quo for killing someone.

You really think that 8 months and a years driving ban for driving on the wrong side of the road, killing a teenager and hiding in the US under a different jurisdiction is appropriate?

As noted above - US military being tried on U.K. soil for crimes committed against U.K. citizens under US law? Is that ok?

What sentence would a UK citizen working in the US receive for driving on the wrong side of the road & killing a US citizen? Allowed to return to the UK & only a driving ban in US & a 12 months suspended sentence? I doubt it.

I'm sure if it was your child in the morgue you'd still write the same post...

If he has diplomatic immunity then AIUI we cannot prosecute him for anything and that this is standard practice across the world. However he would probably wish that Britain would be able to deal with him given how rough American prisons are. Do they even segregate the nonces from the general population or just put everyone all together?

All of it.

Pathetic "sentence" for killing someone through carelessness.

Time actually spent in prison: zero.

Impact of a 12 month UK driving ban: fk all.

The very definition of "got away with it".

AIUI there are different levels of immunity. Only diplomats and their official diplomatic staff have full immunity. General and consular staff only have immunity for official acts, and can be prosecuted for other criminal acts.

Completely irrelevant. The sentence she got was exactly the same as a Brit would have got.

If you made a "careless driving" error and accidentally killed someone, what sentence would you expect? Ten years? Life?

So a crime by a US diplomat, discovered as part of an investigation in the US, resulting in a US court order to enter his house and grab him and then send him home?

Sounds a lot like them cleaning house and dealing with their own issues.

UK authorities knew nothing about any of it, wouldn't have had access to the US evidence and probably couldn't have touched him anyway. And then we'd likely have just wanted him deported at the end.

The only point I'd start to care is if he's been actively taking photos in the UK and had escaped any investigation for that. Otherwise it's all a US problem and they can deal with this st.

She was originally charged with Death by Dangerous Driving.

CPS agreed to reduce this to Death by Careless Driving. they also agreed that she didn't need to turn up to Court.

Basically everything was done to ensure she suffered zero consequences of her actions. The so-called "trial" was a face saving exercise.

You've absolutely no proof of that whatsoever.

10 years? Life? Stop with the childish hyperbole. If I got the same sentence she did, I'd be over the moon and thank my lucky stars (even though it would impact me far more than her, seeing as I drive in this country).

The maximum sentence for causing death by careless driving is 5 years in prison, with actual sentences applied usually in the range of 2-4 years in prison, according to google. If it was classed as dangerous rather than just careless driving the sentence can be up to life imprisonment. I understand her charge was reduced from dangerous to careless, so I'd say she definitely got away with it.
