How long is it typically taking to receive the V5 having purchased a 2nd hand car, assuming the seller has sent their part off promptly?
Bought a car from an indie on 29th Aug, I have the green slip but was hoping the new V5 would have arrived by now.
DVLA say to wait 4 weeks before chasing up, but not to leave it beyond 6 weeks or they charge £25 for helping you!

You could always chase up the dealer as most will do it in front of you online there & then when you buy.
when done online usually a week or so.
If we don't have the V5 and have to post they can be anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.
As an indie dealer I tend to do them in batches every 7-10 days and just job lot them first thing before the day ends up busy.
If I suspect someone is going to be a bit of a pain I sometimes put to one side and then do it after 30 days.

That might explain why dealer wife’s car came from didn’t do it for a year!Annoyed with myself that I didn’t notice - I was focused on making sure we got the acknowledgment for her old car.

I think occasionally we get a customer say they haven't had it and its not processed. I assume the odd glitch when doing multiple.
Its a task Ive had a go at trying to automate to be fair could be a few more missing if I have done it wrong

It was a year old car they’d bought then registered to themselves for a salesguy to use, only for us to buy it. I reckon the tax reminder arriving prompted them. Was bit miffed the keeper change was backdated for a year - surprised that’s possible.
Unless you have done so already then drop the reg on the DVLA site - https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

I took a private plate off a car in August, put on retention, and the replacement log book (with originally issued registration) arrived in the post about 3 days later.
Bought my current car over a fortnight ago and no sign of a V5 yet..
We do have a massive local backlog with post though, so it's bit of a lottery either way.

Thanks, good call, didn't realise it showed that info. I've just checked and the last change of V5 was 11th Sept, so 12 days since purchasing. Maybe the dealer waited until he had a few to do, as suggested above? It will show the date the last V5 was issued so you will know whether it has been processed.
At least it's been processed and I'll just have to wait.
I sold my sons previous car today and I did the V5 change online this afternoon, and it is showing as such on the DVLA website.

They won't charge you £25 if you have the green slip.
I bought two vehicles earlier this year and the traders both didn't bother to send off the V5. I waited beyond the 6 weeks and then filled out the form to apply for the V5. If you have lost it they'll charge you but I simply ticked the option saying I had the green slip and included that with the form. I then received both V5s within a couple of weeks.

I've no idea if the garage did it by post or online. I'd assume they'd do it online to save the cost of the stamp?

Exactly the same for me.Bought my car Monday 14th (paperwork completed 2.30pm) and by the time I'd got back from the dealer, the GOV website stated that the V5 had already been issued, which I received on Thursday morning.
Much quicker than I was expecting as have waited up to 3 weeks previously...
