I'm not poor. I've had nothing but made my way to something.
I have Friends who will buy Business-Class flights to DXB for £4K each and a Rolex they just put in the safe and never wear. FFRR on the drive that rarely gets used. They both say they have to keep working due to their commitments. Both 64.
My golfing Brother shows up every week in his beyond-shiny new Porsche Boxster and every bit of top-end golf gear. He always wants to park as near to the 1st tee as possible and tries to engage others in the car-park in the possible hope they say see him and say..'nice car'. He wants to LOOK like success but the truth is he was pensioned off in his late 30's from the police with a big settlement and has not had to worry about money for the last 22 years. He has 2 Rolex watches. He never wears them unless he's going to visit the Porsche Showroom.
I don't HAVE to, but I prefer to wear nice old Seiko's, drive a 16YO AMG when I'm not scooting about on my old Flying Scot 10-speed and going on adventures in our ancient Camper to the wilds of Europe. I'm OK s
tting in a cupboard for 8 weeks at a time 
I'm a bit fed up with my Friends Wealthsplaying. It makes me feel uncomfortable. They haven't always been this way and I value their Friendship. I'm sad that conversations with them can now be about Gant, Boss, Rolex, Ping. Range Rovers and whatever box-tick else of that genre. They know I'm OK on the pennies but they have NO idea as to what extent. Sometimes they probe but I deflect and it really irritates them. Don't like showing off but I could.

You seem to know a lot about other peoples' finances and their assets, whihc suggests otherwise.
Why do you care so much? And why are you humble bragging to us? No one on here cares either. You sound, envious, bitter, jealous, in some combination.

I'm ok with it, it's their choice.
But, that doesn't mean I understand it. I similarly have a family member who has it all and likes folk to know he has it. But, never wears the watches for fear of theft, only takes the Porsche out on nice days (or to golf course) for fear of miles/degrading it, never invites anyone bar someone who can help him 'social climb' to the house, and also claims he is working until aged 70 'to be able to afford to retire'. Sadly I think he's a heart attack in waiting and won't make 70, but at least he will be the richest chap in the graveyard.

I have a friend who "isn't poor". He had a nice RS4 for a while, then a Jag F-Type convertible in the gorgeous dark green. He loved having nice stuff, but hated it being flash.
The example being he loved the look and sound of the Jag as he was driving it, but hated the start up sound from cold if people were around.

Oil money used to mean folk were stupid with it.
Still remember asking a colleague about her new Land Rover purchase (city use only) & asked of it was a special edition with extra features because it had a black roof. She beamed at me & said, I don t know, it s just lets everyone know it s more expensive
Far too many tales but another one that stuck out
Was out last night @ ? We go there because they get in Russian King Crab it s like £100ea. (Never said if they enjoyed it)

In a heavily male dominated industry it bred a completely materialistic type of woman, be it wives or daughters addicted to the lifestyle of trying to get one up on their friends. TV s were literally changed every time when new ones came out & I knew someone who installed them & replacing asked why to be told - oh my mate/nrighour got this one so I wanted a bigger/better etc
All this extravagance was financed to the hilt & the downturn in the industry had a massive impact

Two identical houses side by side. House number 1 drives a brand new generic SUV. House number 2 has a SAAB.
Straight off the bat as a first impression...who has more wealth and is probably a more interesting person? You know the answer is the person with the SAAB. The person with the generic SUV doesn't actually own their car. It's just a white good with a monthly payment. Yawn.
...they're probably still nice enough people though, and the SAAB owner might be a nob. But I tend to turn and look at old stuff. I'm not really impressed or interested in things everyone pays a monthly ammount to rent and never own.
