Metallic rubbing noise when releasing the clutch pedal.
Discussion
This is a strange one, I've rebuilt the engine in our van and the engine is pretty much perfect now, I've also fitted a new set of disks and pads to it all round. I cant say if this noise was there before or not as I never really drove it anywhere.
When you are setting off or accelerating there is a metal on metal sound, it sounds for all the world like a brake dust shield rubbing on the disk, slightly intermittent but other times fairly loud. But I've checked every wheel and actually found one dust shield quite close and also a ball joint shield very close as well but moving these back hasn't cured anything at all. It defo not anything rubbing on the disks.
But I've just experimented and found that when lifting the clutch pedal back up in gear the noise starts, even when stationary and with your foot on the brake so nothing is actually turning from the gearbox to the wheels. The only thing that is turning is the clutch pressure plate, does this mean the clutch plate is worn out, I cant see it being anything else. It also has a solid flywheel so nothing to come loose in there either.
The thing is the clutch came with the engine and looked nearly new, admittedly the engine was from a peugeot 208 and the engine went into a dispatch van so obviously a different load factor but the clutch looked identical to the one that came off, same diameter, same splines, same pressure plate. I did actually order a 3 part clutch for the van but when it turned up it was the wrong one so I elected to put the nearly new one in instead, I just used the thrust release bearing out of it instead, which also looked the same.
So to summarise, foot on brake, in gear (any gear) lift your foot up enough to engage the clutch without stalling it and there is a metallic rubbing sound. No noises if the clutch is pushed down and released out of gear. When driving the clutch feels bob on, no slip or juddering or anything, in fact it feels like a brand new clutch.

Can you clarify the 'or accelerating' bit? The rest of your description seems to suggest the noise only happens when the clutch is slipping but partially engaged. But if you're really saying it happens whenever the engine is applying torque to the transmission, you could be looking at a completely different problem.GreenV8S said:

Its both, when you initially set off in 1st the noise starts almost straight away, change into 2nd and the noise briefly stops until you put your foot down again and start to accelerate. it doesn't do it when you are coasting. But also if you sit with your foot on the brake in 1st (or any gear) and let the clutch up partially you can hear the same (or similar noise). there isn't any noise if you let the clutch pedal up when its in neutral, brake applied or not.Its possible its two different noises and its just a coincidence although I'm pretty certain there isn't anything external rubbing on the disks, wheels, driveshafts or tyres.
I don't get why its making the rubbing noise when its stationary though, the only moving parts are the flywheel, and pressure plate, the clutch disk is stationary so you would think if the clutch plate is damaged then it would still make a noise when the clutch is being applied in neutral, its still clamping and unclamping the friction plate. Also I cant see how the friction plate has worn down from new, the van must only have done 30 miles or so since I rebuilt it. Could it be a dodgy thrust release bearing? or even a spring in the pressure plate.
The only thing I did was remove the pressure plate and clutch from the flywheel to inspect it and then put it back again, I didn't do any resetting of the pressure plate or anything but looking at the old clutch they don't have a reset lever anyway.

There is also a faint rub, rub, rub, sound when setting off as well. The noise is much more prominent out the drivers window than the passenger one which leads me to think its not the gearbox or clutch.
The metallic noise isn't a grinding noise like when brake pads are worn down, more of a gentle rubbing sound, imagine the clutch pressure plate just catching the bell housing in a certain spot each revolution, more like that than a constant metal on metal grinding.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say its the drivers front wheel bearing that's on the way out.

In that case I think I'd be looking for something that could contact a moving part when the engine/gearbox is deflected due to engine torque. Also check what the driver is doing, perhaps unconsciously, when it happens. I saw a case once where the driver complained about drive line vibration only under braking. Turned out that the driver was resting his hand on the gear lever, unconsciously pushed down in preparation for a downshift while braking and worn remote mounting bushes allowed the gearbox extension to brush against the prop shaft UJ in this specific scenario. Not really anything to do with braking though. You can kind of hear the noise in this video a bit.

Think I may have found the problem hopefully.

There should be a bracket holding that bearing in apparently, although it wasn't there when I took it to bits, the shaft just pushed into that centre support.
