I'm approaching 40 and over the past 9 months or so i've noticed a thinning of hair. Not only do individual strands seem thinner, but i'm losing hairs at an alarming rate. Just stroking my head leaves hairs on my hands. I don't even want to talk about the state of my pillows...
Help?
Could be worth a quick chat with your doctor, just to rule out anything else that could be causing such dramatic loss?Help?
Do not shave it off. You’ll look like a taxi-driver / Brexiteer. Grow it thick and long at the back and have your coiffure pomade it into a lump, nice and oily. You’ll look like you own Harrods rather than the herd. I shaved mine for 40 years. I now look like a university professor. Trust me.

Male pattern baldness doesn't make your hair fall out in great amounts in a small period of time. It's a gradual process, over years.
How much hair are we talking?
I haven't got any bald patches, but I haven't been to the barber in 2 months. Previously i'd *have* to go at least once a month, but generally every couple of weeks. I had an extremely thick head of hair, probably my best asset... not anymore. How much hair are we talking?

Anything else going on - weight loss, stress? Could be factors causing temporary shredding. I've lost (planned, put the effort in etc) 15kg since April and my hair has thinned and apparently thinning hair is temporary factor of losing weight.
I have been on a crash diet weight loss thing since the end of April, but this hair loss started before that. I've lost around a stone, i'm not a big guy either.Stress, not really. Mentally issues, possibly but not serious.

Barbers cut long hair. They trim.
If your hair is falling out, the long hair will still remain?
You mention hair on your pillow. How much? A few strands or....?
Try a different GP at your doctors. Do not position it as 'im worried my hair is thinning what can I do to slow/stop it' but as a concern that its coming out in your hand, it really shouldn't be doing that. My hair thinned in my 40s but it for sure wasn't falling out, it just thinned over the years.

Yes the hair grows longer, it hasn't all fallen out in one go. I imagine some of it may grow back after it's fallen out. I'd previously go to the barber frequently to trim it, thin it out and keep it in shape as it was so unmanageable. Barbers cut long hair. They trim.

Right now I only need to do the sides as they've grown out, the top is thin enough that I don't need to do anything to be able to manage it.
I haven't counted the amount of strands on my pillow, but enough to be alarmed about.

Most of my hair fell out in the shower, I think, over many years.
My point is if you're losing hair fast - clumps or you can physically brush it out of your head - persist with your doctor.

Thanks for the advice. I've booked another appointment for next week. I'll be certain to raise the concern. During my previous appointment, i'd asked to be referred to a specialist, they said ok but I could be waiting a couple of years.

Not clumps, strands. An abnormal amount. More than what i'd expect to see normally. I've noticed this two or three times over the past few months. Most of my hair fell out in the shower, I think, over many years.

Thanks, I will.
