I went to Swindon on Sunday and parked outside a bike store. Guy on the bike next to me spoke to me about my bike then I went into the store. 20 ish minutes later I walk out, the same guy immediately pulls out and rides straight past me. I walk up to my bike to see a snapped aux light and a damaged helmet (I'd strapped it to the bike). Two other guys then come up to me to explain he dropped his bike and knocked mine off the sidestand in the process. All of this is confirmed on CCTV and by at least one other witness.

So, left the scene of an accident without providing details or even TELLING me what had happened.

I spoke to my insurers about it and decided to claim against his - who as of yesterday allegedly still haven't been able to get hold of him/heard from him.

The DIRECTOR of his insurance company yesterday agreed for them to take full blame due to the evidence I've so far provided. It was initially decided that my bike would be picked up and taken to their "coachworks" but I had said I was very wary of it being carted off and stored somewhere for months on end.

I/he had very roughly logged a list of parts from the Suzuki website which came to circa £900-£1000, you then have about £900 ish worth of Schuberth C5, Aux lights etc etc.

They've proposed transferring me £2700 cash in lieu of them fixing it. He said going through their coachworks would be in the region of £3600 including their Labour and not any hire bike. Was also explained that this would NOT end up as a CAT D/N and is simply a cash payment as settlement - I have this in writing from the Director.

What do we think please? As you can see it's all cosmetic with the indicator being most urgent. Helmet is ofcourse scrap.

Me? I'd take the money and run, but I'm not precious about my bike and can do the work myself.

They should be paying you the £3,600 to cover the repairs, your time fixing it and also something to cover the hassle. They are on a winner as they won't be tying up their resources and having to pay out for bike hire etc, etc.

Take the money and ask them to confirm they wont log any Cat on bike

That stuff is easy to fix/replace and you'll be quids in

Shame the other biker did that. Not cool that.

Another vote for taking the money and sorting it out yourself.

I would push back on the amount though, don't take their first offer... I would probably go back with wanting £3.5k and "settle" for £3.2k.

Take the money, do it in your own time, either repair the bit or s/h eBay or new.

I’d definitely do the “take the money”. Just fix what you want - save more but buying used. Maybe get a fruity exhaust instead of OE. Sell original one.

As to the “do a runner” aspect - I consider that to be the norm; a lot of people pay what I consider ludicrous amounts to insure their bikes and cars or just don’t insure at all, so they do a runner. An honest person is an outlier these days.

This is rubbish.

One of my colleagues was recently knocked off his bike. He was stopped at a roundabout waiting and the moving car behind him cut alongside the back of him to go into the next lane to overtake and swiped his bike. Knocked him off, skidded him and his bike along the road a few feet and then scarpered off.

He'd only had it for a few months, and is a nearly new Multistrada V4S, now has a bunch of scars and road rash and damaged panels.

No one else stopped, the driver in question scarpered at speed whilst he was tumbling to the floor so he didnt get any details at all, not even the reg of the car.

Hes pretty livid about the whole thing but what can you do?

Negotiate to above £3K and take the money.

How did you identify him, was his plate on CCTV?

Once I had the money I'd file a police report for him leaving the scene.

100%. Take the money, it seems a reasonable offer. No one dicking about with your bike. They invariably pick up rub marks and minor knocks being carted around before anyone even touches them with spanners.

Thanks.

Yes, in writing that there will be no Category assigned to my bike whatsoever - it hasn't even been viewed by them apart from the photos I sent.

Thankfully, the two guys that spoke to me noted his reg down and gave statements to the insurers.

I'm not particuarly concerned about doing the work myself, I just don't want to be pied off with an unreasonable offer considering all the fannying about I'll need to do with ordering new gear.....

Take the money, fix the bike, buy a new lid and move on with your life.

Worse things happen at sea.

The only thing I'd add is that if you decide to take the offer make it conditional on timing e.g. "I'll accept the offer on condition of cleared funds by 2 October to bank account sort code xx-xx-xx, account number xxxxxxxx". There's no reason to expect them to mess you about as they have been up front, but there is also no reason to trust insurance companies (I'm still waiting for an offer on an £1800 claim from last October - with witnesses and Police report).

Yeah, I think they're dealing with me so quickly as I went straight to some very, very senior people in the parent business so guessing they want rid of me.....

If that were me it'd be getting a new indicator, accessory light and helmet. £700 or so? Spot of paint/polishing for the rest and bank the leftovers.

So it sounds like I'll be seeing you in Swindon tomorrow too. This time next year...
