Replace x1 timing chain

I think I'll be attempting this fairly soon for a friend, its a 2017 X1 118d manual with the N57 engine I think, front wheel drive, coming up to 200k now.
Having never done this before is it easiest if the whole unit (engine and gearbox) are removed from the car to work on it or is it just as easy to remove just the box and do it that way, obviously this is the transverse engine. I reckon it needs a new dual mass as well judging by the strange sounds it it making at the moment.
Due to not having a ramp to work under the car I think I'd prefer to take things out from the top as opposed to drop the subframe down from underneath whilst lying under it if it does need to come out, I do have an engine crane though.
