Years ago, when everyone first started having phones by default - not just a novelty or luxury, you'd often see them driving whilst hold the phone to their ear talking. This was then dealt with by penalties, Police operations, and also bluetooth just becoming really common.

Now, I think phone calls are less common for a lot of people. Instead, it's text messages, Instagram, Facebook, email etc.

Recently, I've noticed huge numbers of people driving whilst continually looking up and down, clearly typing something on their phone. They're all sorts, Mums with kids in the car, young men on their own, tradies, etc.

Have you noticed this too?

Yep. People hunched over their phone whilst trying to type something. Then the traffic ahead of them moves off and they look utterly stupid. It's even worse when they try to pretend they are not on their phone as it's more obvious.

Absolutely. People are addicted to their phones and many don't let driving get in the way of feeding that addiction. You can usually spot them a mile off.

Many are also driving cars where the voice control would allow them to do it in the car without touching the phone!

I honestly don't get it, I've seen it a lot.. and often it's dumb stuff, like instagram or facebook - I used to commute in london in bike so great POV of people using their phone.

nothing important basically.. the fines are 6pts now, why ? it's also so dangerous.

I never use my phone while driving, most I do is click on satnav when it is attached to a phone mount.

Just don't get why so many people have to have their phone glued to the screen right in their sight line.
It would drive me nuts.

Yes, it's an epidemic - then counterpointed with reckless driving when they realise they've been doomscrolling at 45mph on the M3 and are running late.

Constantly. Almost every time I'm in the car I'll pass someone staring down at a phone in their lap or holding against the wheel whilst in a call on speaker mode.

It's probably compounded by living in an area with half a dozen schools within a mile and people thinking they have more time than they do because of a 20 limit.

Yes, only today noticed a van driver blatantly holding it over the wheel. Shame the death cam doesn't show these things clearly enough to report them

The lunatic who smashed head on into me on my side of the road, on my motorcycle early this year, is suspected of being on a phone. He replied No comment in a 30 plus minute interview & has pleaded Not guilty at his first court appearance.

I have noticed this too. I remember back in the early 2000s before it was illegal, people using their phone was quite common.

Now with connectivity in cars being what it is, people can talk on their phones easily enough without touching it. But yes, not uncommon seeing people peering down at their phone, quite clearly texting or on social media. Ridiculous that people can't tear themselves away from this crap to concentrate on not crashing the car!

I got the impression that when they increased the penalty to 6 points that it did have a positive effect but since then most people have realised there's virtually no enforcement so standards have slipped back.

I don't know anyone who has been done for using a phone while driving.

yes rife around here

dont know why the police arent out shooting fish in a barrel at busy junctions and they would have my full support for a genuine danger

make the fine cover an extra officer if not enough staff is the excuse

They increased the current fine to £200 and 6 points because 3 points and £100(?) wasn't working. They are going to have to introduce £400 fine and an instant month long ban.

One of the single biggest issues with driving I would say, and what makes it worse is so easy to avoid it. I would suggest that no message is important enough to not wait to be responded to till you get to your destination. OR, if it really is that important you clearly need to pull over and give it your full attention.

When out walking the dog, I would say at least 30% of drivers are either on the phone or have something really interesting on their lap.

I was behind a car at temp traffic lights last week, lights changed to green car in front just sat there, I drover off and drove round them, yep on the phone. But yet had the audacity to flash their lights at me hahaha.

No objection to people holding a phone to talk. It's long been my opinion that whether the phone is in the cradle or hand, it's the act of concentrating on the call that's the issue and the main distraction, so I haven't an axe to grind, although I am conditioned to not doing so myself. I don't like being on the phone in the car regardless of it's location, it simply removes your concentration from where it should be.

People texting should be banned though, it's a completely different level of distraction.

Agreed. I try to avoid it and would never make a call while driving. On the rare occasion I answer a call while driving I notice I have no memory of the drive afterwards. Maybe I'm terrible at multitasking (my wife certainly thinks so) but it does seem like it's impossible to give both your full concentration at the same time.

I've got a friend who is always busy and hates driving, she sees it as a waste of her time so she makes all her phone calls while in the car. If she doesn't have a work call to make she'll phone her mum or a friend for a chat till she reaches her destination. I just can't get my head around that.
