Watching Matt's preview of the new BMW 3 series he revealed one milestone feature - "Driver Routines"

Timestamp: 4:30
https://youtu.be/NJJxakiMqgQ?t=270

BMW has added driver routines (profiles) with logic conditions (eg. When you start the car) ... to toggle various system including stop/start ... lane assist, speed warnings etc. The profile is bound to the driver entering the car (key).

This is very much welcomed but does anyone know why we couldn't have had this much earlier - is it new EU legislation, or have BMW found a clever loophole to bypass the EU regs to avoid having these system always on upon start?

Awesome news, hope we see it across all manufacturers biggrin

I'm guessing all BMW have done is setup a routine to run after the car has started, technically the systems have to be enabled by default and then a user can choose to disable etc. So you are still starting the car, the systems will be enabled and the routine then disables them... sounds like a loophole they have exploited.

Yep agree. It starts in 'normal operation', but the routine is set to immediately turn it off. Seems a bit cheeky to me

Intelligent Speed Assistance regulation says

(b) it shall be possible to switch off the system; information about the speed limit may still be provided, and intelligent speed assistance shall be in normal operation mode upon each activation of the vehicle master control switch;

Apparently the new Dacia Spring has something similar called the 'My Safety' button (timestamp 6:50).

Well, I hope more do it, because I am not replacing my car until then.

It’s ridiculous that these awful systems have to be on every time you start the car.

The usual rule is a minimum of 2 deliberate actions to deactivate, but the ISA regulation is a bit less prescriptive.

They've exploited a loophole which will probably get closed. They must have given their type approval technical services lots of wurst and kuchen!

I have just bought an Alpine A290.

The best button it has is the one I press twice and it shuts all that Nanny mode rubbish off. Thank goodness... Nobody wants all this interference, it just distracts from the serious business of driving.

I'm all for it

Pretty much every time you turn on a device you log into a profile.

Any piece of software you have a profile of sorts.

I have seat settings in my car profile, aircon etc so why on earth not?

It’s the same with my wife’s new Renault Clio. Absolutely straightforward - even if you forget before you set off then click the button twice at the first annoying bong and all sorted.

Yeah, same system across all new Renaults and Dacias.

But hasn't there been talk of having all the systems on...... permanently, with no way of disabling them frown

Looking at image 2 from the OP it says

If you select this function, you will receive a notification prompting you to accept the routine manually as it affects the journey.
Which I understand to be saying that while you can set up a routine to automatically deactivate the speed limit bong when you start the engine, you still have to press 'OK' on the screen each time to actually do so.
So while the routine can in effect bring up the off switch, you still have to press the switch each time.

IMHO the best thing car companies could do would be to open up their infotainment just enough that third parties could sell deactivations of this nonsense.

It will be interesting to see how it goes. Euro NCAP will probably start deducting points if it is available. Although if the manufacturer has done a decent job and is way over the 5 star threshold it wouldn’t matter.

That will come soon enough. Probably retrospectively with OA updates too, never mind new cars. The megalomaniacs in the EU don’t like people not doing what they try to force on them and actually make decisions themselves.

Haven’t Renault / Alpine been doing this profile
Load for adas systems since pretty
Much they became mandatory (2022????).

Today I was forced to use a rental car for work.

Kia piece of st. Within 5 mins of leaving the pickup, it had beeped at me about a 1/2 dozen times. I had to google how to turn all that st off. Then again on my return journey.

If that’s the future of motoring then they can stick it up there arse. I’m going to buy something decent from pre all this becoming mandatory and keep it going for 15-20 years.

I don’t know why anybody would buy a Kia. What a hateful horrible Piece of st to drive.

Bings received:
1) Speeding. It thought it was a 10 mph limit. It was a 30mph limit.

2) Driver not paying attention. Agreed I was looking down to see what else it was binging about and telling me I was supposedly doing wrong.

3) warned me I was too close to the centre line. Just fk off I was avoiding a pothole.

4) Engine idling whilst stationary. Very busy junction, no space to get out, had to just sit and wait. (apparently it doesn’t have stop start, so that’s one plus point).

5) Again for not paying attention. This time I most definitely was. Had sun glasses on for though as it was that time of day with a low sun. So maybe that’s why it got triggered. Can Kia drivers not wear sunglasses to drive.

6) Thing tried to pull me left in to the kerb as its lane collision avoidance system detected what it thought was a car in my lane. Nope. Nothing there. Just a parked car.

fk do they just unleash these things and let us beta test them.

I have never been so pissed off driving a car before as that pile of crap.
