Hi everyone

A relative has a Toyota CHR and I saw the condition of this rear tyre. Would you recommend replacement?
The edge of the tyre is all cracked pretty bad.

The MOT is due at the end of this month.

Thank you.

If it meets the tread depth criteria and there are no exposed chords and no signs of delamination, it will probably pass the MOT.

I wouldn't be comfortable driving tyres that are damaged like that. It would be worth finding out whether the damage was the result of under inflation, hooligan driving or simply the tyre hardening due to age. That might let your relative avoid the new tyres suffering the same damage.

How odd.

No it's not. There's obvious splitting in the rubber across the outer treads and the sidewall and the tire is already over 6 years old. I would not drive 70mph on it.

No it definitely looks unusual.

It's a Saferich FRC26, so I wouldn't risk driving on it at 70mph when it was in new, perfect condition!

It's so well known / well regarded that the TyreReviews.com website doesn't even list the brand!

But considering the prices I can find for it are at that of Landsail, Triangle, Radar tyres it tells you something about their target market.

But as it's a relative, they were probably persuaded by the tyre fitters that it's as good as a P-Zero Trofeo!

Is that a sub-brand of Wha-Da-Fux?

I just changed the rear tyres on my mum's car for cracks that were far, far smaller than that! They were a pair of Vrestein's that were fitted when we bought the car back in 2019 (dated 2418 and 4217) and when the tyre fitter took them off he found the inner to be cracked too, they were so close to failure it was scary. He also said that they would only have attracted an advisory for an MOT as the visible cracks weren't bad enough to show cords or even get a fingernail in.

I'd be changing those immediately, even a different new ditchfinder would be preferable but obviously try for a midrange.

New tyre time, regardless of what the MOT says.

I would encourage them to put their hand in their pocket and fit some decent quality tyres.
