Exige or not Exige
Discussion
Morning all,
Well I'd hoped that I'd be posting new pictures of our Exige today, (Kept it under my Hat) me and Mrs Boggy were going to buy a new Exige this weekend but after driving one on Saturday decided against, I drove a 54 dark blue Exige with stage 1 pipe air cond and touring pack. Yes it was a fantastic car but to be honest didn't seem as fast or anymore special than my currant R, it seemed to lag more under the 6000 rpm to, I will say without a doubt it stick's to the road's better but the lack of rear view aggravation of taking the roof off and extra money puts me off, I just can't justify the extra 5k on a new car, I'd go for another R next time and add a few more extra's:idea:

Mate, you need a ride in Alex's Honda mate. I know I keep banging on about these things but I think you'll be close to what you want. It's really planted, and when that thing takes off... ohmyfrickingoditsfast!
Well it's funny you should say that, we might be getting another car in a year or so and it would be either S1 or a S2 for Lynd's, we could chuck a engine in that or I could make enquires about something then.
You are right thou Tim I want to stick to a Lotus but I want something that is mentally quick

It depends if you intend to track it.
If not then I would stick with the R as its probably the better car for everyday driving and roads.
You cant get a proper feel for the Exiges abilities on the road, you just dont get anywhere near its limits.
On track its a completely different car and the difference over the 111R is huge (even though they share the same engine)
As for a Honda S2 if its just for a road car why bother? Again you wont get to use half of its performance on the road and the 111R / Exige is plenty fast enough for road driving (assuming you have some respect for the law and your licence)
I would only consider the Honda in an S1 or S2 Exige. The S1 Exige is a little too basic for my needs as an everyday car and the S2 would be too expensive to do (for a couple of years anyway)
To track or not to track. That is the question.

Hi Dave,
Good point's mate, I may well feel very different when I've been on the track, I just don't think I'd get the use out of it on the road

I disagree - having been in both, the Honda'd S2 makes WAY more sense as a proposition for a road & track car simply because it is far more tractable and the power is more accessible in all gears, and (seems) to be far more linear compared to the sudden surge you get when the 'yota engine hits cam 2. You just don't have to thrash its arse off like you do the 'yota for it to be quick.
Davey, apologies if I'm going over old ground, but have you been out in one yet?
No worries Tim. Everyone likes different things.
Not had the pleasure of a s/c Honda yet. I was booked for Mallory in November and was hoping to bag a pax lap with Bogie but I cant make it now
(doing Bedford in December though
)
I've no doubt it will be very impressive and hugely fast but I've come to the conclusion that I dont need any more performance for the road.
I would like more performance for the track but as I said a Honda'd S1 Exige would be too hardcore for me to use as an everyday car and buying an S2 Exige then spending another £10K converting it isnt an option either.
If Lotus offered the Supercharger for arount £5K I would look at that in a year or so's time.
Other than that its stick with mine as it is for a year or so then start looking at Nobles.

I'm planning on doing Bedford in December too so will a) be cool to meet you and b) maybe I'll be able to talk you into going for a lap or 2 with Alex in his non s/c'd Honda'd S2 for comparison.
Would be good to get your opinion on both. Alex has been in Bogies too IIRC and said it's just incredibly quick and the power immense across the board.
Good banter
P.S. All this Noble talk, are you turning in to Dan v2? Noble for '06 and then a GT3RS in '07 perhaps?

Surely the main issue with the 'Yota engine is the mapping - Brooke Kensington Honda's engage VTEC at 6K, as do CTRs. It's possible someone's working on a chip which would give more of the 'Scuffham-spec' Honda characteristics. Personally I prefer the peace of mind from a standard(ish) engine and if it's installed in an Exige the lack of air-con from the Honda installation would be a PITA for me.

on paper most people dont think that an NA Honda can be *that* much difference to say a 111R...whereas in reality, another 30bhp, 30lb/ft and (generally) 80-100Kg less weight does make a good difference.
I had a TT230 conversion before, and have driven the 111R and S2 Exige - from a build quality & ride quality POV and also the engine its better than any std K series engined car.
The thing with conversions is they suit a particular type of owner. Some people always prefer factory cars, for a number of reasons ;warranty, potential re-sale, easy to insure etc...also, some owners see the Elise as a stepping stone of a car that must be owned on a road map of sportscar ownership......on the other hand if you are into trackdays and love the concept/price to performance ratio etc of the Elise...and you intend to keep it for many years (rather than chop it in for a Noble etc) then a conversion can make sense.
I like trackdays, and Im an adrenalin junkie (the elise is only my 3rd car - only superbikes before that) so now matter how much power I have in the Elise I will never be happy
...so for me the SC Honda was the natural progression of things...I dont have any intention of ever selling it, unless someone makes a car that has a better combination of 300bhp, 830Kg, cheap to run/track and remotely practical/useable.
As for the 111R vs Exige - agreed, theres not as much difference between the 2 performance wise as there was between an S1 120bhp Elise and an S1 190bhp Exige ....stick some tyres/suspension on a 111R and away you go.
Unless you really want the look of an Exige and/or dont want a convertible then Id stick with a 111R and put some Nitrons on it and buy a 2nd set of wheels/tyres for trackdays....you would lose more money swapping cars than that set-up would cost.......

£500 for a sports can and induction is peanuts in comparison to a house mate. Stick it on the mortgage and have an early Chrimbo present
You know Lynd's Tim, I'm sure she'll be Ok after the house is all sorted, have you seen the deal's that Wilson's are doing there ggggrrreeeaaattt !
