Someone please explain the logic here...

Bought my daughter her first car last year. A little Mini One which had been SORNed as it wasn't being used and needed some work doing.

Got it sorted while she was learning and doing her test. Once she passed, we got it on the road and put her private reg on it.

The last 12 months the Mini has been taxed, MOT'd insured etc but now it's developed a fault that doesn't warrant the money being spent on it, so she's bought something else and now we're looking to scrap it.

The DVLA won't let us take the private reg on it because it has been declared as SORN in the last 5 years.

So we can tax it, MOT it, insure it, drive it and spend whatever money on it making it roadworthy, but as soon as we're ready to get rid of it, they put a blocker on it.

Surely it would have made sense to do that BEFORE we look to get the car ready for use, rather than when we want to get rid of the car and take back the registration we've paid for and is effectively ours?

Mental.

The Internet suggests you can still do it by post

Doing it by post is the only way but my point is, if they wanted information on the vehicle history why not ask for that at the point we're trying to tax it or put the plate on a year ago? Instead, we were allowed to spend all that money on it making sure it was road legal. Surely if it was that important, why not do it as soon as the car is being taxed for the first time after being declared as SORN.

Not when I want to take my reg off and get rid of the car.

Nonsensical.

That's just the way it works - nonsensical or otherwise - in reality it means doing via post ( V317 I think ) instead of online as a retention act so hardly that painful in the scheme of things.

It's not about doing it by post... It's illogical putting a block on removing the reg when we put the reg on it and taxed it a year ago and have been driving it since. Why not question it then?

Different departments I guess and why would you think they should be joined up or act in the customers interest ?!
Try dealing with the various social care departments involved in my Mums’s dementia care which numbers 3 entirely different ones with not a shared computer system or notes recollection system between them.
That’s enough to drive someone to drink.
