Hi all,
Have a slow puncture on my tyre and found this… can it be repaired or does the tyre need replacing?
Many thanks

Looks too close to the edge for a standard repair.

Thanks. It’s a Lexus rx450. There’s about 3-4 mm on each of the front tyres. Is it usual practice to replace both tyres on the axle or only the affected tyre?

Too close to the edge for a standard mushroom plug repair.

There are posters on here who claim there are specialists out there who can fix that kind of damage. All I will say is that, while there may well be such next level tyre whisperers about, I have never managed to find one when I needed them!

You can get those DIY tyre plug kits online, my old dad always told me they were dodgy but the yanks have been using them for years - how bad can they be? If it's just a runabout I'd be tempted to give the DIY approach ago, but not on a car that does many motorway miles.

It's a tiny screw, I'd plug that myself and never worry about it.

I've used this loads of times, great quality kit.

There are cheaper variants.

Another vote for repair and forget.

A tyre place wont do it as it's too far from the centre, you will need to do it yourself.

My mate has been running about with a DIY repair in a similar area for over a year now. With 3-4 mm of tread, you likely wont be keeping that tyre for ages anyway?

There are strong recommendations to replace tyres at 3mm remaking tread depth. You are close to that, just replace. I never imagined Lexus owners as tight-wads.

I have to agree (but not about routine replacement at 3mm). However, at 3-4mm a tyre is 75% worn, so repair seems somewhat illogical unless lack of funds is a driver (no pun intended).

Edited to add my basis for 75% worn; 8mm tread at new, 1.6mm at life expired.

I would do the same. It's a long time since I have had a tyre repaired or replaced for something like that.

A "tyre place" can't legally repair that as it is too close to the sidewall, but a "sticky string" repair will still work as a DIY fix.

I would too, as a temp repair.
Its just that by the time i get it replaced it may have worn down to less than 2mm.

Thanks all… measured tread depth and it’s actually 5mm. Don’t mind replacing if felt necessary. Suspect conventional wisdom is that given the location of the puncture then a repair is not recommended.

I’ve actually got 2 spare tyres taking advantage of the recent Costco Michelin offer of £100 off 4 tyres. The first two were only changed 2 weeks ago. I will be booking an appt and seeing whether they recommend changing just the affected tyre or both…
