If you live outside of the big cities, you may not have noticed or fully grasped the extent of the transformation taking place. You may go about your daily life assuming Britain broadly resembles the country it was 20 or 30 years ago. It doesn't.

Net migration is massive (1 million in the year ending March 2023) and this is where a lot of the focus of the right wing political parties are but it tells only a fraction of the story.

In 2025 just 53% of babies born in England and Wales were recorded as White British. The statistics are similar for primary school pupils at 61% and trending downward every year.

My old primary school in Birmingham was 95% White British in the 90s and is down now to 3%.

The direction of travel is clear. At some point in the next 10-20 years or so, White British people will become a minority nationally. At the moment the figures are being propped up by the population still including millions of older people born when the country was overwhelmingly White British.

I suspect a lot of people haven't quite appreciated how far this process has progressed. The Britain of 2040 is going to be a completely different place.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. The Labour minister saying that the warm beer, black labrador vision of England is a thing of the past is right imo, she was just 5 or 10 years too early.

Do black people not drink beer or have labradors?

The biggest demographic change I have noticed over the years is the number of care homes and prevalence of elderly people when I travel about the country.

I agree, we will be a minority. Already you are getting the deflection of responses not addressing the points raised but instead gaslighting with bad faith arguments meant to derail the thread.

I don't see a problem with this change in demographic. As long as folk work and pay taxes the country will prosper and that country will still be England (insert any other country here).

I have no problem with this. Look at Britain's history, we are all decedents of Scandinavians, Romans etc... and ultimately Africans.

This is a non-issue.

There should be any "us" and "them". People are just people.

Who is this "we" that will be in a minority? If that's white British the last census had 74.4% of the population in this category. Which of the remaining groups is going to be the majority by 2040?

Increase or decrease in number of care homes ?

As above really, I'm white British but dig a little deeper and I'm actually a percentage Scandinavian, Roman and Germanic.
Our country has a wide and varied history of immigration, why is it so important to you that the country remains majority white?

This isn't a lefty attempt to derail the thread btw, I just struggle to understand why people (normally middle aged white men) get so worked up about this.

There are two types of people opposed to high levels of immigration.
One is concerned with ethnicity, the other is concerned about overpopulation.
I think we know where the OP stands.

The other thing is, that 1 million figure is 'net migration'.
There is a significant issue in that lots of wealthy 'British' people are leaving.

We're becoming a crowded country with way more poor people than decent jobs.
Some people like that, so long as they are in the elite (and think their brats will be...)

The Small Heath and Bordesley of the Peaky Blinders era was populated with immigrants - most from Ireland.

Those Irish are still about, many run significant businesses in the city, but the cheaper housing is now home to new waves of immigrants. It's all part of a cycle, so in and of itself not too sinister. Brum's had a mosque since the 1960's too.

Where I am concerned is with the magnitude and speed of change. Incoming migrants, in number, will not reflect the culture and norms of the existing demographic, whether those existing people are immigrant or not. If you have lots of people turn up, you get much stronger ex-pat type ghettos, rather than cohorts able to fit into society and employment.

Putting aside any 'positives or negatives' of different peoples you must know that isn't true.

Unless of course you are speaking genetically.

I haven't said that I see it as a good or bad thing?

Im just discussing that the culture of the country is changing and will inevitably change as statistically those that consider themselves 'White British' become the minority. And that isnt because of skin colour, its because of culture and religion.

Where i grew up in Birmingham, the area has changed beyond recognition (again, not saying that that is a good or bad thing)! The impression I get is that those living away from some of the big cities aren't aware of the how rapid the change has been, particularly in the last 5-10 years.

You've moved to the southwest haven't you ?

AI tells me that in 2006 there were 18766 registered care homes and today there are 16566

The percentage of the population over 65 has risen from 16% to 19% in the same time frame

I'd rather live in a country full of nice, positive hard-working people.
What colour skin they happen to have, or where they came from isn't important to me.

The latter seems to be very important to the op. Which is also fine.

The main one I have noticed is the amount of shouting at the local bus stop. 1130 at night? Just stand there shouting down the phone

I've lived my whole life in London, albeit in the suburbs. I still like it and if anything, probably think it's nicer than it used to be when I go to central London where I worked for 40 years.

You're probably not walking around keeping count of who's "white British" though.
