Just been sorting out new insurance for the missus who is taking her test shortly. Got a cheap little runabout for her to practice, and then use after she passes. Went online, to find some prices, and ended up with a very good quote, with me as policyholder, her as named driver. No names, but think of large pachyderm with a good memory.
Got all the guff through the post, please supply us with proof of no claims etc etc. It turns out (had no idea about this), you can't use your no claims on a seperate policy. "Here we go" thinks I, there's the next hour or two wasted listening to piped music down the phoneline. Not so! ended up starting the new policy with zero no claims for an extra £105, and when my car comes up for renewal in 2 months, give them a call, and they'll "mirror" my no claims for that policy. Result
The calls were dealt with by knowledgable people that spoke intelligent english, over a phone line that could be heard. I've not had that for a while, so it came as a bit of a surprise!
Sorry to blabber on here about it, but it struck me as strange that I felt compelled to tell others of the excellent service I've had, when we should be able to expect it.

I enjoyed the same service from the same "pachyderm" (that must be a PH first) yesterday. Bloody nice chap. Saved me some cash as well.

I'm with Elephant... oops! sorry, an un-named Pachyderm and have had the same level of service and customer care extolled here.

Just playing devil's advocate for a minute, isn't obtaining insurance for a car like this, where a named driver is actually the main driver (which I presume she will be when you say that this is a cheap runaround for when she passes her test), is illegal?

Not that I wish to cast any stones but it does seem to be - in effect - insurance fraud, which the majority of PHers normally take the moral high ground on.

Just out of interest, given that Elephant were aware that you had another car, didn't they suspect that this was a try on?

Sorry, had a crap morning and feel like being controversial. And if I picked up the original post incorrectly, then I'm happy to admit I'm a tt

I wasn't trying it on. I got the initial quote off the net, and then phoned to confirm some details. I'll admit that having my own policy still active wasn't mentioned, nor asked about. I simply went through the questions, and bought insurance. As mentioned before, it wasn't until I phoned my current insurers, and explained what I was doing they told me about not being able to use no claims on two policies. It's sorted now, but now you've got me thinking again about the main driver thing. I explained very clearly to the helpfull staff what we were doing, and they haven't mentioned anything about main drivers. To be fair, I'll probably drive as many, if not more miles than SWMBO.
Anyone else had probs with main drivers?

If the main driver is not the policy holder then it is known as fronting and is illegal as far as i am aware but i'm sure someone will be along to tell you how i'm wrong or show you a loophole in a minute.

This is a good tip, and one that insurance companies make a bomb on out of peoples vanity.

2 similar conversations here, cut to the relavent points:

1st conv.

"Hello, XYZ Insurers here, how can I help?"

"Hi, Just bought a car for the wife, I want insurance."

"Very Good,.....How much is the car worth?"

"I Paid a grand for it, so £1000."

"Very good sir, here is your premium based on your valuation."

3 months later, car gets bumped, claim goes in, Insurance company pays out on their valuation, not yours, you get 200 quid.

Conv. 2

"Hello, XYZ Insurers here, how can I help?"

"Hi, Just bought a car for the wife, I want insurance."

"Very Good,.....How much is the car worth?"

"Ah ah, no clues, tell me what you will pay me in the event of a total loss, and lets base the premiums on that please."

"Very good sir, here is your premium based on our valuation of 200 quid."

3 months later, car gets bumped, claim goes in, Insurance company pays out on their valuation, you get 200 quid. It still sucks, but at least your premiums wont be higher than they need to be!"

Looks like I'm going to have to make another phone call and check then. I've been totally upfront about it all, seems odd that they haven't said anything.

Where is the best place to insure a 1971 Capri? Not as the main car.

Go for a specialist Classic insurer as you can easily qualify for classic insurance. Adrian Flux, Lancaster, Graham Sykes etc.
