Report on 2-ten FM this morning (commercial radio for North Hampshire and Berkshire) regarding the A339 in Headley, between Basingstoke and Newbury.

Apparently this is a 40mph limit section on a fast road and the locals are complaining that everyone drives at 80mph through the village etc...

There have been 8 incidents recently (how many speed related?) which have meant that TVSRP are going to place a mobile speed trap in the village as a temporary measure.

They have said that if the speed trap DOES NOT REDUCE accidents, then the trap will stay...

But I thought that that was whole point Liebchen...that they reduced accidents... You mean they say they don't?

As for 80 mph through village.... do not know village but do recall scammers in Wales claiming juggernaut with speed limiters were hurtling through at all hours at 80 mph

Ist bit of exxaggeration... bet ist really 50 mph.... if really speeding on the 40 mph zone in village...

Also Ings... accident occur outside at slight bend in NSL - und local press say not speed - both were taken ill at wheel - a nod off und a heart attack....

Too often locals "estimate" speeds to be way in excess of reality. You'd have to be just as daft (or have a vested interest) if you believed them.

I've been going that route everyday for the last three weeks and, even when it's reasonably clear, traffic is doing no more than 50mph. Often less than the posted 40mph.

NB: It's not that long ago that this section was still national speed limit and people still normally kept too well under through the village.

There are a few accidents but normally caused, as far as I am aware, (just like the one that nearly happened in front of me tonight) by people turning onto or off the main road into the village roads being impatient on a very busy road.

Agreed.

Very few people do more than the 40mph through Headley. (I drive the road regularly.) Those that do might be doing 45.

The locals are complaining about speed. That's just a NIMBY excuse. What they'd really like is for the A339 (a MAJOR A ROAD ROUTE) to NOT be going through their village as its often very, very busy and congested. That's what they're actually upset about. Beats me why they don't just come out with it!

Oh because roads belong to everybody and anyone who pays road-tax is entitled to drive their car on them. So complain about something else in the hope those nasty cars will just go away....

Agreed. Its not speed that's the problem. Its stupidity.

Last night, whilst doing an IAM Observed Drive, my Associate and I came across TWO seperate prangs driving around Basingstoke.

NUMPTIES! How hard is it! Basingstoke is NOT the most difficult of environments to drive in and STILL they prang.

I agree. Mind you the road could really do with being upgraded to dual carriage way and bypassing Headley.
