Someone just built a nice little business with IDR's
Discussion
Mandatory for most competitive motorsport from Jan next year. Unit lasts 2 years, so it's a recurring gig too.Even at "special offer" price of £50 thats £3-4M of revenue, the price doubles after next year.

It doesn't mean that the price will double next year. There was a whole consultation about this a few months ago. The devices have been available to buy direct from the manufacturer for a long time at the higher price quoted. MSUK do them at a discount.
MSUK still have to pay for them. They won't be getting them for free.

Yea, my point was whoever bought these to market has carved out a nice little niche for themselves.MSUK still have to pay for them. They won't be getting them for free.

They’ve been in use elsewhere for several years and generated useful data. If it makes the sport safer and the costs stay roughly as they are I’m ok with it to be honest. I find it hard to criticise what does look like a genuine and well researched safety initiative and they seem to be trying to mitigate costs as far as possible.
The thing is... The data they generate will be valuable data for the various manufacturers involved with Motorsport, so why should competitors be forced to pay for that - Facebook don't charge you to give them your data. You give it to them in return for a "free" service
The various memberships, transponder subscriptions, stupid sticker you have to buy because the ones from last year aren't correct anymore... Etc all add up. For those of us who only do a handful of races per year, all of those little costs start to make the whole thing cost prohibitive.
License renewal - £110
Club member and series registration - £200
Transponder subscription - £100
Extinguisher service - £30 per year (cost split over two years obvs)
New impact recorder £20 per year
That's a minimum £460 before you've even rolled the car out of the garage.
Grids are struggling as it is.. adding more cost isn't going to solve that problem

They could have mitigated costs further by making the batteries replaceable. They'll be at least £100 each in 2029.LennyM1984 said:

Harness life has been doubled as has seat life so that's reduced costs a fair bit. A great deal more than the £20 a year the IDR is going to cost.Transponder subscription - £100

Extinguishers were always recommended to be serviced every two years and anyone who valued their car did so. I was amazed when people said they had been racing for 10 years plus and never had them serviced.

But harnesses, seats and extinguishers all represent tangible value to me (They're going to save my life). This IDR is costing me money so that MSUK can harvest valuable data that they will then sell on to the circuits and manufacturers. Why should I pay for them to gather an asset that they will hope to make money from? LennyM1984 said:

So could the IDR. All the data is fully accessible by the owner via the app at all times so if you have a crash you'll know if it was hard enough to have potentially damaged your safety equipment or caused fractures unseen in the car itself.I've had two reasonably hard crashes and I've replaced my harnesses both times. Perhaps I didn't need to but without actual data it was impossible to tell. It could have saved me a lot of money and, the flip side if I hadn't replaced them, perhaps serious injury in another crash.
