Hi all,

I am back for my generally bi-annual post. I have always wanted a DB9 since I was a kid as I knew I would never get into bonds vanquish.

I also vowed to myself that I would never purchase one of the newer generation Mercedes based cars. However recently the DBX has become really appealing. Especially given the fact second hand versions of each are relatively close in price (I know they are different types of cars).

I know the DB9s will likely be a classic in the future but the repair costs if something breaks makes me wonder if buying a newer car would be better.

I am not sure I am close to the required deposit yet, which is what I say everytime I post. Given I am sure everyone here is more knowledgeable than me I would love your opinion.

Thank you.

Are you sure? Looking at Autotrader, DB9s from 2012 start around £45K but DBXs are north of £70K.

Would someone who's always wanted a DB9 suddenly decide to buy an SUV for an extra £25K...? Unless you want to impress on the school run, I don't see it.

Sorry let me clarify I am talking about cars from Aston official dealers which are in the same region, although I note there are fewer DB9s in this category.

The timeless warranty is what makes me want to buy official as I have heard horror stories from people who find the ideal car only to have problems or who go through great expense getting reports on cars they ultimately don't buy (Although that probably saves them money in the long run).

The DBX is also appealing because it is newer so I would hope problems would be less frequent but no doubt as expensive.

I see the logic but it's a shame not to get the car you always wanted through fear of repair bills.

Do you get a Timeless Warranty just by buying from a dealer or is it a chunk extra? Remember that warranty companies make money by charging more than they pay out...

ETA if your budget is £60K+ you're into Vanquish 2 coupe territory... just an idea smile

Yeah it definitely doesn't feel great but as I get older the reality of ownership hit me more.

You get a year of timeless for buying from a dealer and they guarantee the car has gone through a check. There is the option to extend after that though I believe.

Like I said originally I am not sure I will ever be close to a deposit as everytime I get close life finds a way to spend my money but that is the same for everyone I guess.

Good point on the Vanquish but the adult in me also worries about destroying the car on a pot hole. Again sure that would mess up any car though.

You can get almost any Aston into Timeless (there may be age and mileage limits - I've not checked and am going from memory) as long as you pay for (and it passes) the inspection. And yes, it can be extended (in chunks of one or two years) but it gets more expensive as the car ages (what doesn't?)

My V8V came with one year Timeless, I extended a couple of times (which proved to be worthwhile), but now I'm "self-insuring".

One thing to bear in mind before buying - always have some money in reserve for 'unexpected maintenance'. I don't know how much of a panacea the warranty is but outside that, any bill under £1K is a win IMHO.

On that front I'd strongly advise you to avoid a DB9 with Sportspack suspension because on UK roads it gives a crashy ride and extra cabin noise. Anyway, good luck with your hunt smile
