My car started making a whining\screaming noise on the journey home this evening, I strongly suspect it's brake related as noise stopped as soon as the brakes applied which to my mind suggests some sort of rubbing. It was was too dark to do any proper investigation and all I manged was a quick feel of each wheel. Both fronts and the rear offside felt warm but the rear nearside was cold.

First thought was that the warm rear wheel indicated that was a sticking brake, but now thinking about it I'm doubting myself. As the rears are used when you apply the brakes should they be warm and that the cold nearside wheel means that the brakes aren't working on that side and the issue is there?

Appreciate it's hard to tell without seeing the car but any suggestions of what the likely culprit is

Car is a 2015 Peugeot 308 SW with electronic parking brake.

It does sound as if the brake in binding due to a sticky caliper on the wheel that is getting warm and yes the noise can stop when you apply the brake.

Had exactly this with an old Shogun, albeit on the front. Caliper was sticking and it made hell of a racket with vibration through the steering wheel.

Whenever I've had a sticking caliper the brake has got scorching hot. After driving for even a shortish distance (10 miles or so) at normal speed you could stop, walk round the car and feel the heat from that brake as you approached it. With your hand 18" or so away it's pretty easy to tell.

Granted you could have one that's barely sticking of course. I'd go for a drive, stop the car vary carefully and gently then jack the back up and spin the rears by hand.

Warm ? perhaps, but only if the others are also similar. A difference on one would suggest a problem.

100% the warm side will either have a sticking caliper or the pads are stuck in the carrier.
When was it last serviced?
If you look at the disc you should be able to see if it was really hot with a slight blueish tinge.
It’ll likely look different from the other side.
Rear brakes will need serviced, and it it’s not been serviced for a while the fronts will need done aswell.

Also check the rear bearings - if a wheel was moving around more than normal then that could also lead to funny noises and hot brakes.

Your rear calipers look very similar to my rear calipers - 2015 Ford S-Max, electric parking brake.

I have recently replaced both calipers - the rubber dust cover around the piston is glued onto the rough casting - yes, they cheaped out and couldn't even machine the outer grooves for the dust cover to sit in on the outside of the casting - this dust cover gets a hole in it, lets water in, and then you get rust on the piston under the cover. If you think "oh, I will just extend the piston out a bit and clean it" you end up with a heap of ball bearings and spacers on the floor under the car.

Many bad words were said, but Ford were really good, kept their parts place open for me after a panic phone call, happily explained I had to remove the electric motor part to get the refund on the caliper (you get a fair bit to return the old caliper back to them) and I was driving around that evening.

It took me a while to find as the piston moved freely once cold - but the discs were a really nice blue colour for ages!

I have a cheapy thermal pointer thing - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermometer-50%E2%84%83-6... - touching the brake disc isn't ideal for your fingers.

Good luck!

Thanks all, gives me some pointers once I get the car in the air at the weekend!

Really beggining to hate this car, it's spent more time off the road than on in the 3 years I've had it!
To be fair, it's been mainly wear and tear items that are to be expected with age and mileage but it just feels never ending!
