944 Headlight Adjustment

Hi Everyone,

I was trying to adjust the beam on my nearside headlight last night (1988 944 2.5 lux), and I'm having a lot of trouble geting the adjustment right:

Basically the nearside headlight is pointed too low and I need to raise the beam, but the adjustment is set as high as it can go, and it's still not really high enough.

I've been following the procedure in the haynes manual, and was hoping someone might have a bit more information (once more, I'm not convinced haynes were looking at the same model of car :D) or some ideas to try.

I had similar prob on my S2, with me the headlights came up, then dipped a little, I spent ages fiddling with the adjustment to no avail. Finally twigged put up lights, undoing them on the spline that raises them then manually winding them to the highest point, push back on spline and tighten.
This stopped the little dip when raising, and them meant I could screw back in the adjustment bolts as I was lighting second floor windows ;-)

Cheers for that - I'll try that when I get it back (she's off at the Bodyshop getting the sills sorted out , as well as getting a few scratches etc fixed)

By 'Spline that raises them' do you mean where the assembly for the individual light joins to the connecting rod?

Cheers Dude, it actually turned out not to be the adjustment you mentioned, but the result of some utter cretin butchering the wiring loom..

At the bottom of each light is a small motor for adjusting each light individually (and apparantly automatically - I've no idea what actuates them), not mentioned in the Haynes manual , and some idiot had for some unknown reason cut the wires to the nearside motor, then managed to totally -up joining 3 wires together in the right order

I removed the shit connections, redid it properly with clean wires and the lights adjusted themselves upon re-connection - I'm much happier now

Just have to see if she passes the MOT...

P.S. cheers haynes - can't you just admint that you didn't even bother looking at the car when you wrote the sodding manual, you just guessed it would be the same as the 924?
