I recently bought a 2nd hand car from a private seller, and it's been 3 weeks and I've still not had the V5.

I taxed the car off the new keepers slip.

If the seller has either not done the thing online to tell the DVLA, or has done it but has filled the address in wrong or something, what am I supposed to do?

You could always try ringing DVLA.

I had a similar problem in September
Contacted DVLA via the WhatsApp link.
Sorted quickly,
Then both V5s turned up on the same day….

"They say" wait up to 4 weeks, then contact them.

Having a similar issue. Waited nearly 4 weeks.
V5 has the address Main Street
DVLA uses a postcode checker that rejected the address as there was no house name or number, so the V5 went into Limbo.
Spoke to a human who hopefully has now sorted it
10 days and counting.....

Can you do it online just off of the new keepers slip? I always do it online myself as soon as I've sent the money, that way I know it's done right.

If it's done online you'll have it within the week. On the odd occasion that it's been too late to use that service or the seller doesn't want to I make sure to get a picture of the V5. That way I can do it online myself the next day.

Yes, the 11 digit code needed is the same as the 12 digit code on the new keeper slip without the leading number.

The process is to apply for a new one via DVLA. Sellers often fail to do the change of keeper properly (private AND traders) so they have a procedure for this.

They tell you to wait 4 weeks but if you wait more than 6, you have to pay £25, the same as for a lost one. rolleyes You have to get or download a form and send it off with the new keeper slip.

If it was a buy from a private seller, you could (as suggested above) just drop the first digit and do it yourself. Since you bought VED as the new keeper, that status won't change.

That is very helpful if it's true, thanks!

rolleyes Can't believe I've never noticed that. That's a great tip, thank you.
