Exhaust on a vehicle fitted with a diesel particulate filter emits visible smoke of any colour (8.2.2.2 (d))

Exhaust emissions exceed manufacturer's specified limit Plate Value 1.80 Reading 3.65 (8.2.2.2 (a))

My car has failed on these 2 things. Firstly my car is an old banger just for work but I dont want to give up on in it yet. Its a suzuki sx4 1.6 ddis 2008. From what I can find it doesn't have a dpf so can it fail on the first thing. They suggested the high reading was due to only driving 2 miles a day and to buy a reddex diesel cleaner. Do you think this will work? Is there anything else I can try? Or how can I test the emissions before retest. I dont want to have to pay to test again if it fails again.

thrash the hell out of it, vpower fuel and reddex or similar.

Take it for a test when it's red hot. The engine not the weather

Possibly EGR and inlet manifold coked up, possiblethe EGR is so coked its not functioning correctly ie allowing regen gasses to enter continually, no doubt you've changed the air filter already and checked all engine and crankase breathers,
Strong solution of injector cleaner, then a serious thrashing, i usually use Forte, might be worth sticking two bottles through, i usually stick half of one bottle directly into the fuel filter anyway and the rest in half a tank max, you'll need more than a handful of miles for the cleaner to have any effect.

When i had emission issues, after cleaning out the EGR and inlet i asked the lads at the MOT station if they could just check the readings, had to mince about for an hour till they could fit me in but an easy pass, they weren't going to charge me for that but i always give them a drink if they've helped me out.

This all day, it needs a good run, 2 miles a day is not good for it.

Isn't a retest free if it's within ten days?

As above, put in an additive, I like Millers and Hydra and always super diesel.

My W reg Landcruiser 3.0D and 10 plate V8 diesel Range Rover run pretty good with the above combo.

If the station charges for retests the no it won't be free unless it's one of the specific non chargeable retest items which emissions is not one of so it is in theory chargeable.

"Where a vehicle is left at the testing station for repair and is retested before the end of 10 working days following
the day of the initial failure, then only a partial retest is needed for which no fee may be charged.

Where a vehicle is removed from the testing station for repair and returned for retest within 10 working days
following the day of the initial failure, then only a partial retest is needed and a partial retest fee may be charged.

Retests and Appeals
Only one Partial Re-Examination is permissible per full examination"
