What is the legal status of radar detectors currently?

Are they still legal? I understand that there were/are plans to ban them - when are they going to come in and what will the likely penalties be for using one?

Right, Yes they are thinking of banning them - gov- to put forward next year.....

But no need to not use one at the moment, ok...

Fines, How longs a bit of string?? prob £60 or so at a guess...

Understand that the Road Safety Act 2005 is before Parliament and soon to be published and will amend Con and Use Regs to ban detectors. (Most prob fine and points)

Offical speak:

Ban speed camera jammers and detectors:

Safety Cameras form an integral part of a successful road safety strategy, strict rules govern the positioning of cameras to ensure that they are sited only where there is a demonstrable risk and danger to road users. There is overwhelming evidence from both UK and international literature that speeding results in more collisions and more severe casualties. Furthermore the evidence from the independent review of the safety camera programme by University College London and PA Consulting found that cameras significantly reduced the number of people killed or seriously injured at camera sites.

Devices which interfere with or detect the proper functioning of such cameras have only one purpose: to tell drivers when they can break speed limits and get away with it. This is unacceptable, it prevents the police from carrying out their duties, and is a danger to other law-abiding road users.

The Government will not be prohibiting those devices that rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to warn drivers of published camera sites or posted speed limits, as these compliment the Government's policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to drivers, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads. However, the provisions of the Bill mean it will be possible to prohibit a vehicle being fitted with, or a person using a vehicle carrying "speed assessment equipment detection devices" under the Construction and Use Regulations

I've said it before: Radar detectors look just like the GPS fixed camera warning systems. Unless you are STOPPED and SEARCHED, the device SEIZED and carefully examined by an electronics expert how is anyone going to know?

Feel free to drive around with one.

But, in my experience, they are utter shite and why would you want one? Sure - they do detect GATSOS. So do GPS systems - better - and with no false alarms.

Not only that you can get camera databases for FREE to put into your SatNav these days. Why pay?

So do road angel etc, gps based systems still alert you to Gatso's that arnt operating? The Snooper I have wont do a thing if you drive past a Gatso thats not actually working, if it is working it bleeps etc about 30m before you get to it. Does the data base update to just the live cameras or to every site?

Every site - GPS ones don't distinguish between an operating camera and one that isn't switched on. My view is so what - would you really pass one above the speed limit anyway? Not me - I don't want a ticket. But you are right that that is a "disadvantage" of GPS systems. Myself - I consider it a small one in comparison to the never ending false alarms of a radar detector.

Radar detectors do not detect Truvelo cameras at all - switched on or not. Whereas a GPS database simply knows where they are.

Yea mate i know what you mean.... but i do love other drivers faces when they brake to 40 on a dual carriage way when going past one & you rocket past & no flash from the camera!

30m!!! So you're the bloke who slams on the anchors at the last minute are you? At NSL or above, reaction time is greater than 30m.

Well it depends, on a fast Sunday morning drive I tend to stick to the roads i know well, I know the camera sites so normally approach at a safe speed. I have to admit it is annoying sometimes when the detector doesnt give that much of a warning and you brake late as everyone else you have just over taken thinks you didnt see the camera until the last minute, in reality you knew it was there but wasnt sure if it was active. I suppose it keeps you on your toes..... please dont take my comments to seriously as i dont normally speed, only when everyone else is in bed & the road is calling me...

I guess I'm not alone in being sickened by the propaganda = lies and bull5h1t in that officialese post, no shooting the messenger DvD but ye gods! Successful strategy...cameras have strict rules...research blah blah...utter b0ll0x.

In the UK alone - though there's plenty more fodder from the US of A - CC Paul Garvin has provided hard and statistically significant data showing that exceeding the speed limit is a very minor cause of crashes 3% I think he had it, also the 'rules' for siting are just guidelines aren't they? As for successful safety strategy, until the last year's stats road fatalities had increased for two years ina row in England in spite of more GATSOs and scamvans than you can throw a minister at.

Utter b0ll0x.

Made me laugh the bit about GPS complies with their aims.

The reason they won't ban them is because they will have to ban all GPS devices which they won't do. We are paying billions towards a European GPS system - after all two GPS systems in the world just aren't enough

In the old days it depended on what area you were in if radar detectors were considered naughty or not. TVP area considered that, if you had one you must have been about to commit an offence even if they hadn't caught you (a sort of automotive, going equipped I suppose) and would get you to disclaim it under threat of prosecution. Norfolk took the view that there were so many false alarms from temporary traffic lights, etc, that you slowed down even if you didn't need to so were actually a good thing. That was until an importer of them was found to be in Norfolk and, upon being asked what was going to be done about it, the CC made a statement that the matter would be investigated. Sudden U turn (nothing new there then).

The new rules have got to allow GPS ones. They have no choice otherwise they would have to make it illegal to load a Points of Interest (POI) database into your satnav. You don't need to buy a GPS detector, just download the database for you Tom Tom or whatever. That really would be impossible to enforce.

Going back to the original thread, what are the likely penalties for getting caught using one?
Since I own a detector anyway, I tend to have it in the car. If I get caught, and get a slightly bigger fine / few more points, I will continue to use it. If there is a very severe punishment ( four figure fine / gaol sentence / getting your car crushed / etc ) I may stop using it. When is the bill likely to be passed and come into force?

As far as I'm aware from reading various threads with safespeed etc, this bill has been placed on the back burner, due to time constraints in the current parlimentary session.
It is doubtful if it will make it into law this side of a general election.

Forgot i started this thread

My main worry about buying one is that I could be wasting my cash on something that was going to be rendered obsolete imminently.

k50 del - I hadn't realise the proposal had been postponed, definitely good news!

I'd better get shopping then....
