I’ve just picked this car up which I’ll be using for the next week. I noticed this damage at pick up and the photo was taken at the garage. Is it safe to drive on? I have a 100 mile drive up the m6 tonight.

Are the cords exposed under the “flaps”?

I don’t think so
That is exactly why I take photos of every wheel before I drive a courtesy or rental car away now. A quick walk around with time stamps has saved me an argument once already. If she really did not clip anything, I would be polite but firm and ask them to show the inspection notes and photos from before she took it. Tyres are easy to miss on a rushed handover, especially if the damage was already there and not very clean.

I think it's useable. I would.

I decided not to risk it. I was driving my family 100 miles up and down the motorway and I didn’t feel comfortable with it. If it was just me in the car driving to and from work I probably would just put up with it.

If there are no exposed cords you are probably being over-cautious... but given it's you and your families lives, and other people's for that matter, that you are being cautious about you probably did the right thing too.

Absolutely not.

The repairer would be the first to change a tyre with just a brush mark.
I won’t chance that tyre on any car.
