HiFi : Turntables?
Discussion
I'm coming around to the idea that i need a turntable, not for everyday use but I'm certainly coming across more and more music that I'd like to buy that is vinyl only and its starting to frustrate me.
It doesn't need to be made of ivory and moondust and no, i'm not about to try and make it in the world of Superstar DJs but it does want to be pretty decent.
Anyone got any recommendations?

Technics
Come on, bit more effort son. Even I could've come up with that!

Sorry should be studying lol.
I'm not sure on the turntables as I don't own any vinyl! Currently listening to my Technics hifi which at nearly 8 years old sounds as good as the day I brought it. (Its one of the midi systems). We have two other Technics hifi's at my parents house one of which is about 20 years old and still going strong.
Excellent kit IMHO.
IIRC Panasonic have stopped branding their hifi goods technics and only use it on their "DJ" equipment (Record decks and headphones)
Pro-Ject, Rega and Clearaudio (about in ascending order of price/performance) spring to mind.
Or you could go 'modern classic' and find a Linn LP12 or Pink Triangle (the latter of which is a bit like the TVR of turntables: towering performance and stunning looks for the money, but can be a trifle fragile and tiresome to run if you get through a bad patch. Well worth it, though).

Linn and Rega obviously, but there are some excellent ones at reasonable prices.

Depends what you call middle of the range hifi I suppose. www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo-2.cfm/Product_ID/548/source/kelkoo
Not bad for the money, though I would hunt out a Linn Sondek, I've always had a soft spot for them.
Another question, what will you be playing on it? Dance music or rare classical?

Cool.
As for material, not classical stuff. Mainly old funk/soul and dance music (to use the term loosely) - electronica and all its variations.

In that case I would be more tempted to get a pair of Technics and a mixer and learn a strangely addictive new skill. Mine are still in the loft and I'm itching for a scratch.
Have to admit that I did go through that phase in the mid to late 80s and it is quite addictive...
SL1210's to impress your mates, ideally matched with some white gloves, a fluro vest and some vicks for the 'christ, remember this? conversations'
For midrange to silly quality I think sir needs look no further than Linn
Mind you, Inc's is nice, heavy, lovely warm sound cant remember who makes it though.

The only problem with a Linn is that they only play at 33rpm.
Neil, e-bay is your friend here. A couple I'd throw in are:
Systemdek III (XE if you can find one)
NAD 5120
Dual CS-505 II,III or IV, or the 506
Technics SL1200/1210 (being the deck of choice for DJs these are usually sold in pairs for some obscure reason
)
Rega Planar 3
Pink Triangle
Couple for you to go on here. If it was my choice and I wanted something pretty good but not too dear, I'd HAVE to go for a Dual.
Happy hunting!
Greg
EDIT: for DJ-ing, I had a pair of 1210MKIIs, at home I had a 505/2 which I chopped in for a SystemDek. Latter was superb, but you had to lift the platter and swap the drive belt if you wanted to change speeds.....
