I recently bought a low mileage W203 Mercedes, and - thank god - the radio preset 3 was BBC Radio 3 and has a 6-CD changer.
I don't know how one can listen to classical music in a car.

The dynamic range is so wide that when I've been in a car with it playing it's just been inaudible below the wind and engine noise until VAADDAAAAAAMM when the orchestra hits a crescendo.

Oh, I wouldn't listen to any music in a soft-top (if that was what were you alluding to)! The wind in the hair, the smells, the noise are all far more conducive to that experience.

But in a quiet saloon, especially of an evening driving home from work on a quiet A-Road, a bit of Vaughan-Williams or Chopin is pretty soothing.

Actually,I'm not that fussed on how my in-car tunes are delivered as long as I get to listen to the tunes I like (which, despite the above, are not limited to classical)
Setting aside the platform of how you listen to tunes in the car, what do you play in the car?

Me?

Well radio is BBC Radio 3 all the way. I discovered classical music back in 2001, and will always be a part of my listening in and out of the car.

However, there are CD's in the car that include:-

Steely Dan
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Royksopp
Northern Exposure (Sasha & Digweed)
Gary Moore
John Mayer's Bluesbreakers
Albert King
Paul Oakenfold
Turn7

What's your musical mixture whilst driving?

I can listen to many things when driving. Except (c)rap. I can't listen to that, anywhere. Except maybe a bit of Pitbull now and then - he's the one exception. Anyone who can create a song about a threesome (3 to Tango), then do duets with Jon Bon Jovi, has got something going for them.

Current in car playlist includes, in no specific order:

Bon Jovi
Bruce Springsteen
CCR
Reba McEntire
Emmylou Harris
Motley Crue
Guns 'n' Roses
Marc Anthony
Mimi Ibarra
Most of Wagner's operas - but only when the journey is long enough to listen in their entirety
Most of Verdi, Puccini, and Rossini's operas
Nightwish
Iron Maiden
Sophie Millman
Diana Krall
Alison Krauss
Dire Straits
LeAnn Womack
Willie Nelson
Joan Baez
Five-finger Death Punch

and many more.

Variety is needed in the car.

I recently went to the Scottish Highlands and got through AC/DC, Maroon 5, Metallica, Green Day, Foo Fighters and Nickleback CDs.

I like all sorts and often have a variety in the car including

Bryan Adams
B52s
Bebop Deluxe
The Cranberries
Def Leppard
Eminem
Evanescence
Iron Maiden
The Jam
Kasabian
The Killers
Gary Moore
Linkin Park
The Pretenders
Radiohead
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rolling Stones
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Thin Lizzy
Transvision Vamp
U2

On shortish local trips I tend to just listen to Absolute radio but always have a few CDs handy in case it gets too tedious!

Every Saturday evening, I pop out to get a bottle of wine and a snifter for something later on and I always catch the start of some opera or another on R3. For some reason, it always feels like an event - the build-up, the description of the various Acts, the orchestra warming up.

Maybe if I drive Telford - West Brom - M5 North - M6 North - M54 of a Friday starting around 14:00 I should be able to take in Tristan & Isolde....... smile

I used to drive regularly from home in Shropshire to Plymouth.

Tristan und Isolde & Tannhauser were both regularly accompaniments. Even managed Parsifal a couple of times.

Now my commute is shorter - just over 2 hours to a site near Preston, or 3.5 hours to near Woking. Wagner doesn t fit this commute as well.

I think it's the safe environment when solo driving for stuff you secretly like but
would damage your Rawk reputation if people found out.

Kate Bush
The Seekers
Shania Twain
Bette Midler's early stuff.
Dave Brubeck

These days I mostly listen to classical music in the car. I chill out and try and relax while driving.

Normally Classic FM or similar but maybe I'll stream something from my phone, quite like film soundtracks to listen to as well.

unless I'm in the mood to do some spirited driving, rare these days as it's generally pointless. If i do then the rock music tends to go on.

In the car when alone and doing a bit of distance. I get the chance to listen to all the stuff Mrs Marky hates.
666 - Aphrodite’s Child
Greasy Trucker Party.
Bowie - Blackstar.
Uriah Heep.
Yes.

I must invest in this from everything I've read about it (considering my not inconsiderable liking of Steely Dan's work)
