I used to think of my bikes as a summer thing, but I've had my most enjoyable rides of the year over the last few weeks. The pick of them being this Saturday. It was only about 11 degrees but lovely and bright, roads were dry and clean, little traffic, the bike felt particularly crisp. Was my nicest ride since about April. Is it just me ?

Do enjoy a brisk clear day around this time of year. Made it out Saturday and Sunday last week. Both bitterly cold, Sunday had an earlier start so still ice around. Both good days once it warmed up. Roads nice and quiet.

That’s pretty hard core, I get cold feet (aren’t I funny?) when there is ice on the road. I guess you’re quite a long way North.
It gets marginal for me from around 5 or 6 degrees.

Crisp morning rides are some of the best, especially when it's just getting light out and the roads are quiet. They are harder to come by as the weather turns but usually as it drops to low single digits it's too cold to be fun for me.

I did a track day on thursday there. The weather was a bit pants it was cold with a damp track in the morning. Quite a few people there on wets getting laps in the morning. I went out after lunch (when the others had dried the track) with slicks on and it was basically an empty track as others either went home to save their wets, or put in dry tyres.

I've always liked riding in autumn and winter, there is a small victory in being able to dress warm and thus not notice its 5c.

The only thing I don't like it hosing down the bike afterwards if I got it salty or muddy. Especially with the hosepipe ban, had to go to Morrisons jetwash to get the mud off on Sunday.
