Can anyone suggest how to fix this issue I've got on a few walls. I presume it's old caulk which has hardened and then come away from the wall as the house has moved. Is it a case of going round with a knife and scoring it/cutting it off and then re-caulking the join? If so is there any way to ensure it doesn't happen again.

I would imagine that removing it will be the application of a little elbow grease.

When you re-caulk it, I'd recommend the below. Instantly paintable but retains flexibility. I've used this a lot in the house and none of the applications shows any signs of degradation:

Yep run a utility knife along the edge and will come out pretty easily, then buy some good caulk, don't buy the cheapest. The one above is probably good, I have used Geocel with good results. I have used the cheap stuff from Screwfix and it dried out and cracked, in a year or so.
