But it costs 100 sheets and you have to wait over a week to get a damned beer - I'll go to the Sanderson for that experience thank you!

Lord Summersisle is the guru on this subject.

To me it looks like a very expensive pressure barrel on it's side. £30 ia about the going rate. Still it looks cool and has got a nice pub tap.

I'm drinking my way through some Woodfordes Wherry right now, and it's turned out a treat, first try.

Just ordered my next kit....Nelsons Revenge.

Iv'e got 2 barrels and a fermentation bin, all of which came to £70, one brewing, one drinking, this way I'll always have a supply of 40p per pint GOOD beer.

The GOOD is important as any idiot can buy crap 2% beer from Tesco for 40p a tin.

This is true - though I could buy unlimited beer from my local beer emporium.

AND, and this is the big one - the tap doesn't go "ppfffssshhttCRACKswoooosh". You cannot beat the sound of a beer can being opened as an aid to relaxation

Where did you get the kit from? Any good tips for utter novices?

have a search/google around for (at least if you like Ale) Woodfords Wherry Beer starter kit.

its around £40 + P&P for that you get everything you need to start brewing - 2 tins of concentrate, packet of beer yeast, pressure barrel (with tap for ease of pouring) steraliser.

all you need to supply is 1 can opener, 1 facility to boil water and a water supply.

thats about it.

have a search back for Timmys brewing thread - gave loads of advice in that. you need to keep it room temp really for the first couple of days then somewhere cool but not cold (10-15°) for the next couple of weeks. 2 or 3 weeks and its ready for drinking.

the next brew you only need the yeast/concentrate which varies on kits from £5 to £15 - available from Morrisons/Wilkinsons/home brew shops

if you prefer lager - kits are available for them too or stout or porter or mild... all follow the same principles - steralise everything, boil a certain amount of water (40pints means boil 6, add concentrate top up with cold water to the 40 pint mark, add yeast, shake barrel leave for a couple of weeks and its ready to drink - 40p a pint)

Glad it turned out grand.. hope its no putting you on your back too quickly - remember mine took a while to brew - when i tested it on a hydromitor it was around 5.5-6% proof!!

yeah that is a problem...

i noticed my supply rapidly deminished - no sooner had it cleared that i'd finished the thing...

as i remarked to my Dad the other day...

"Dad, i have a drinking problem!"

"whats that son..?"

"Ma barrels run dry!"
