Boycotting Weatherspoons - Turn away veteran wearing a poppy
Discussion
I can’t see this going very well for Wetherspoon.
I very rarely visit one unless there is no other option. If this is true, which it appears to be then I won’t be visiting one ever again.
I imagine a lot of others might have a similar opinion.

The actual article would suggest that poppies aren't banned from Wetherspoons - pretty crappy reporting from the Express really IMO.
Will have to agree to disagree. Maybe have a look on the weatherspoons FB page. You can clearly hear the doorman saying you can’t enter because the poppy is a political symbol.
I agree, the express is a pretty crappy reporting service. Take your pick though. It appears to have been picked up my multiple outlets so maybe go and find the story on the one you prefer. It’s not just the Express reporting it.
A Wetherspoon spokesperson said: "Wetherspoon has been a long- standing supporter of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, with poppies for sale in our pubs, including the Star. There is no ban on poppies in Wetherspoon pubs.
"However there were some standard security measures in place today, as a result of demonstrations in the town. Unfortunately, some members of the public, including some wearing poppies, did not gain entry to the pub.
"The pub closed to all customers, on advice of the police, at 1700 and remains closed today. We apologise to any regular customers who have been inconvenienced by today’s events and look to forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow."
I'd probably call that a one-off - not saying I necessarily agree with it but you could possibly see why that particular pub may have decided that, as a one-off, especially if it was then advised to close by the police.

This was not someone being turned away just for wearing a poppy.
There was a mob of “raise the colours” goons being led by Ryan Bridge filming everything and trying to start a row for likes and clicks.
This is the same Ryan Bridge who been sent a £48k bill from Oxford council after his flagging court case and is going through the same with Birmingham.
He’s flag-mates with one person awaiting trial for murder and another for child porn, and is himself awaiting multiple court cases.
He’s an aggressive violent bully and not surprised the pub don’t want him in.

I saw extended footage of the event, funnily enough on Raise the Colours' Facebook page. The people being turned away were a group of louts, out in force in their Stone Island gear. They were strutting up the street with their chests puffed out. At least one wearing a Raise the Colours t-shirt with a Bluetooth microphone clipped to it.
There is clearly something going on, as there is a heavy police presence. They strut over to the police in front of the pub, begin getting shirty with them, and are turned away by the door staff.
The poppy is not even mentioned until one of the rabble asks whether it is because they are wearing poppies. They also say something about one of the group being a veteran, which again is mentioned after they have been.
Wetherspoons pubs sell poppies on the bar.
They were not turned away for wearing poppies. They were turned away because they were behaving like bell-ends.

You rarely go to Wetherspoons unless there's no option?
There's always an option not to go to Wetherspoons unless you are some sort of pathetic alcoholic. Even then, most 'spoons are within walking distance of either another pub or an offie?
I've got nothing particular against Wetherspoons, but I've not been to one for about 15 years. I doubt they'll miss you if you stay away.

That’s a PR team trying to recover the situation, as you’d expect. In the videos circulating on the internet the staff clearly say you can’t come in wearing a poppy, specifically saying it’s by order of the management. They clearly say if they remove the poppy they can come in!"However there were some standard security measures in place today, as a result of demonstrations in the town. You've got to be terminally stupid to think that a place that sells poppies has a blanket policy of turning away people wearing poppies. Clickbait crap, but it worked.
The explanation of the situation by Wetherspoons does seem reasonable to me. The person could still have gone into the pub.The background to this is of course aslyum seekers being brought in to the country through Gosport leading to protests etc.
It appears that this incident occurred on a day of protest and therefore Wetherspoons had additional security.
Security took the decision not to admit some people who just happened to be filming. As an aside who films when going to Wetherspoon?
As part of the discussion security mentioned the poppy was a political symbol which was probably a mistake however it was being worn by members of a group that were probably felt to be right wing protestors.
It is a common tactic of groups, for or against asylum seekers, to film their activities and those films may not accurately portray what has happened. Living in Crowborough I am well aware of how these groups work.
It is clear to me that anyone who just wanders in to their local Wetherspoons wearing a poppy is not going to be refused accessed.
Go in as part of a group where a protest is scheduled whilst filming may have a different outcome.
This event is nothing to do with Wetherspoons being anti poppy.

Both Weatherspoons and the Express best avoided tbh.
We must be lucky in our town. Our wetherspoons is a great place.
They took the old post office, that had been almost derelict for years, and turned it into a lovely building/pub.
When my kids were turning 18 the doorstaff kept an eye on the group, looked after them.
The food is good for the price.
Nothing negative to report from our one.

Funny how the Express didn't report this.
