Is this normal? They both got installed into separate bathrooms at the same time (probably 6 years ago) and they've both seemingly given up at pretty much the same time as each other......

I looked them up at the weekend and found them on Amazon for £50 each, can't seem to find them today, but they are these ones:

My question is, is it normal that things like this just pack up after 6 years, or could there be something fairly basic I could fix on them both? Not gagging to spend £100 on news ones if it can be avoided, but on the other hand maybe things like this just don't last forever?

Have you tried to run them off a separate feed to test them?

should be fairly easy to hook them into a 13a plug to test?

Well, they didn't stop overnight.....I could hear them starting to 'struggle' for want of a different word for a week or two before they gave up, if that makes any difference?

And they're in different bathrooms so they will be on separate feeds already (if that's what you mean? Not much of a sparky here!)

Are they maybe choked with dust?

I’ve had the same one in one bathroom for 16 years, got about 15 years out of one of two Nu-Aire ones, the second still works but needed a new PCB.

I did get up in the loft and took one of them apart (well, took 3 screws off and removed the big covering plastic) and it all looks pretty clean in there and the blades spinning freely when I moved them. I then ran out of ideas as to what else I could check......

If they both have two live lives and a neutral but aren t working, they re goosed, these don’t have a replaceable control module like Nu Aire.

I've got no reason to think that the wiring etc will have changed (if that means they should still have the lives and neutral) so I guess it is just a case of bad luck that both have indeed died?

Ah right..... well sounds like they gave you a little bit of a warning before they said we have done our last fart extraction.

looks like you are needing to replace these. as I can't see these being serviceable.

Ok, yeah, must be the case.

Anyone got any better suggestions for brand/replacement? Not sure it's the best move to buy the same again if they're doomed to fail after 6 years?

My bathroom extractor has been working for 25 years! It was just a cheap one from B&Q.

Yes my Dad said similar about the one in his bathroom. Not sure how I make sure I avoid this 6 year issue again though

If it'll fit, S&P TD-Silent. Do check the measurements and make sure you've got space as some of them are enormous. They're what I'd specify (and have specified) for my own home where there's space.

These Manrose ones aren't terrible - they're what we use in our rentals - and might be an easier replacement: https://www.screwfix.com/p/manrose-mf100-100mm-inl... (they can be bought much cheaper than from Screwfix) I'd use them at home if there wasn't space for a S&P.
