BMW 335i (F30) | Last Chance Saloon

How much would you pay for a straight-six, manual BMW? Check out this one-of-one 335i...

The current manual fascination can be hard to understand in some ways. When three pedals and a stick have been offered as a regular option in recent years, it’s largely been ignored, with buyers opting for the automatic instead. See the Porsche sports cars as the perfect example. But ensure the manual is produced in limited numbers, make a big fuss about the launch and give it an evocative name and watch the people flood in - see the 911 Sport Classic. Almost like the excitement around manuals is purely about collecting them, rather than actually driving them…

The same would happen with BMW manuals, of course. It has stuck with six-speeds for longer than most, and it’s still there in the M2 for those that want it - but you can guarantee that autos have outsold manuals in M cars for yonks. In all BMWs, for that matter. But should there be another Handschalter like the Z4 for the UK - a last of the line manual M before the Neue Klasse era - there’s going to be an onslaught. After no manual M3s for two generations, as nobody bought them here.

Which has always made sense, really, various DCTs and torque converters being so well integrated into BMW products that the manuals often seemed a bit awkward. Even the most ardent fan would have to concede that. But there really is nothing like changing gear for yourself, even with a less-than-perfect shift action. And with new car ranges seemingly being thinned out by the day, discovering a real curio in the classifieds is quite exciting; those cars that were bought new by the most dedicated of enthusiasts. Cars just like this manual 335i.

The N55-engined 3 Series was always a rare car, because this was the time when diesel ruled the world - and the 335d was one of the best. This particular example is particularly interesting, as it’s a Modern - the entry-level spec on a 335i, with M Sport and Luxury above it - albeit with £12,000 of options. So the interior resembles that of a small 7 Series, with leather, wood and chrome throughout. Maybe not to all tastes, if preferable the usual black with black and more black.

Nowhere in that options spend was the eight-speed automatic. The first owner wanted all those extras with a six-speed manual gearbox. Given our fondness for an M Sport in the UK, as well as so many going for the auto, you’d expect this 335i to be rare - and it certainly is. Rare to the point of unique, in fact: HowManyLeft features other Modern 335is, though only one with a manual gearbox. The definition of a Last Chance Saloon, then. There really doesn't seem to be another one in the UK.

Not that this is in danger of being scrapped anytime soon - it’s far too nice. Just 31,000 miles have been covered since 2012, a couple of thousand added each year by the MOT history. There have been ten services, including one six months ago. You wouldn’t normally regard a 3 Series as something to keep for best, though a manual 335i with this spec would surely make any journey feel very special indeed.  It’s for sale at £12,995, this F30 era of 3 Series retaining its value very keenly indeed. There are still newer 340is and 335ds at twice this money with similar sorts of miles. It’s a nice era of 3 Series, modern enough to be useful for a long time yet without being quite so tech-obsessed as more recent offerings. A manual might make it to old school for most - or the ideal one-of-one throwback for a BMW aficionado…

"The N55-engined 3 Series was always a rare car, because this was the time when diesel ruled the world - and the 335d was one of the best" - no kidding.

I actually fancied an F34 335i, but at the time I could find two for sale in the country and they had weird specs. I had a choice of half a dozen 335Ds at just one car supermarket site, including one with the spec I was looking for. So diseasel it was.

I like the fact it’s a manual 335i, but I especially like the fact it isn’t an M Sport model.

Agreed - it's nice that someone "sensibly" specced it. I would perhaps change the steering wheel for a black one, and maybe the dials for those with a black background (is that fairly easy with these?)

Much rather this than a 320d MSport with coal hole interior and a bodykit

If the PH comments section for any new car review could spec a car... hehe

Quite like the old man spec on the outside but not on the inside. Shame it isn’t a touring

Mum in law has a 320d auto in the exact same colours and trim as that. It always strikes me as a brilliant car when I drive it.

Only problem is some of the plastic trim eg door pulls has gone horribly sticky, some of it coming away like putty.

I have a 2012 328i touring. Done 170K miles in it and it has not missed a beat other than needing a new condenser ( common problem ). Still feels 100% solid. Fantastically built car, fun to drive, has everything you want and nothing you don't. Peak BMW. Won't replace it until it can go no further... And it's an auto, which far better suits this car.

Lots to like here, a great spec. Like someone said, I’d prefer a black steering wheel too, and I don’t usually go for light interiors, but that works nicely.

Yeah, I had much the same issue when i was looking for this generation of 5 series. There was roughly 1 petrol on Autotrader for every 70 diesels so I ended up with a 530d. That had the ZF 8 speed auto and as a complete drivetrain it was flawless. Never for a second did I wish it was a manual.

I currently own this generation of 3 series in the shape of an M4. People say that the non-M spec is more discreet, but my car gets very little attention anyway; it's a 3 series rather than an Aventador no matter what M-bits you stick on. Mine is a DCT and again, not for a moment have a wished I had a manual. As Autocar pointed out, the DCT suits it better and in my case where it's my only car, makes it super easy to drive 99.9% of the time and the 0.1% of the time that you can use the performance, the paddles work great.

£12995 doesn't seem crazy, given that people seem to be willing to pay £8-10k for a good six cylinder E90/E91 car with the right spec.

Have a look on the "E91 Straight Six Bearding" thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

All that cream in the interior(carpets/seats etc) takes me back to the F13 640d we had, and that was a total nightmare to keep clean over the winter I thought.

I'd personally prefer the M Sport, but I do like how rare this is though for sure.

Same. Auto was non-negotiable anyway, since I prefer it in a daily and my other half has an auto-only licence, but the 335D doesn't come with a manual anyway.

I'm another one who is a big fan of that engine mated to the ZF8 auto as well. It was a great combo in the 2012 640d we had(a fantastic tool for overtaking I thought), and it isn't bad in the 2024 X5 40d either I reckon.

The X5 doesn't feel as punchy as the 640d did, but it's dragging around another 600kg over the 640 though to be fair.

I have one of these in almost identical spec. I believe there are only 11 335i Luxury manuals in the UK.

It's a superb car, comfy chassis with engaging drivetrain. N55 will do upper 30s MPG on the motorway all day long.

I really like that and I love beige leather interiors but the full dash / door cards / steering wheel / dials (!) is a bit much for my tastes.

Absolutely love that, I do wonder if the light dash would be a bugger for windscreen reflections though?

I'm still very tempted, fancy something with a mix of luxury and speed, this is both.

I don't know why, but I'm getting early to mid-90's PC vibes with the colouring of the interior on this...

Certainly different, as mentioned earlier, from the usual M-Sport and Luxury trims and a break from the safe/boring option. It's not one for me as I'm still one of the majority that'd prefer the M-Sport option in the also common Estoril Blue.

Do any of the BMW beards have a view as to why the first owner would have based this on a Modern spec, rather than a Luxury one? I'd have thought a Luxury one might have ended up cheaper, as presumably some of the extras he added were standard on the Luxury?
