Just want to sanity check this if I can?

I'm hopefully fixing a sqeeking automatic parking brake by changing the pads and applying the correct grease in the right places. I want to apply the handbrake so see if the squeek has gone before fitting the wheels and letting the car down.

Gemini is telling me to put 2 or 3 wheel bolts through to stop the disc from flexing before applying the brake as it says there is only a small hex screw keeping it on and it might deform otherwise.

If it helps its an audi a6 c7.

Is the AI giving me sound advice or some old rubbish I wonder ?

the small screw will shear if its the only thing holding the disc on,

AI often shows disc removed and yet its still there underneath,
wouldnt want to follow AI for most things

I'd say it is right

Obviously it depends on how hard you apply the brake

But if its an electronic handbrake you have no control over that

I had a problem getting one of these screws out to change a disc and I just smashed it off by whacking the disc a bit and it did come off quite easily

These screws just locate the disc - its the wheel bolts clamping the wheel which really do the work

Why not just put the wheels back on with two bolts in?

Not what you asked but Check the process for changing the pads, might need a scan tool to put it in service mode

They're heavy

Thanks all.

So tightening up (but not fully torqing) say 3 nuts without a wheel would reduce the risk to neglible?

Sorry for being lazy (wheel is outside and its dark) but would the wheel provide additional support to the disc ?

Wheel ads nothing

Just a spacer

So if bolts don't go in far enough to clamp disc then you need the wheel otherwise for this you dont

^^^^ Is the CORRECT answer, bolt shank may well bottom out before the tapered shoulder gets to the disc to protect the fixing screw.

Apart from that, you will almost certainly need the wheel on to turn the hub and give it a bit of momentum to spin it.

I figured that so thanks particularly to ATM.

I don't need to spin the wheel as its the parking brake - the noise occurs when stationary.

And I put it into service mode (brake lining start or something) with my copy of vcds.

Now I've found out the new clips are wrong so gotta wait for some new ones.
